1773 - William Henry Harrison, the ninth president of the United States (1841), was born in Charles City County, Virginia.

1825 - The House of Representatives elected John Quincy Adams president of the United States after no candidate received a majority of electoral votes.

1861 - Jefferson Davis was selected president of the Confederate States of America.

1942 - Daylight-saving "war time" went into effect in the United States, with clocks turned one hour forward.

1942 - The U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff held its first formal meeting to coordinate military strategy during World War II.

1943 - The World War II Battle of Guadalcanal ended with an American victory over Japanese forces.

1950 - Sen. Joseph McCarthy claimed he had evidence there were card-carrying members of the Communist Party in the State Department.

1962 - An agreement was signed to make Jamaica an independent nation within the British Commonwealth later that year.

1963 - The Boeing 727 went on its maiden flight as it took off from Renton, Washington.

1964 - The "G.I. Joe" action figure was introduced at the American International Toy Fair in New York.

1964 - The Beatles made their first live U.S. television appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show".

1971 - Apollo 14 returned to Earth after man's third landing on the moon.

1971 - A 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck California's San Fernando Valley, claiming 65 lives.

1984 - Soviet leader Yuri V. Andropov died less than 15 months after having succeeded Leonid Brezhnev; he was succeeded by Konstantin U. Chernenko.

1991 - Voters in Lithuania voted overwhelmingly for independence from the Soviet Union.

2001 - A U.S. nuclear submarine struck the Ehime Maru, a Japanese fishing boat.

2002 - Britain's Princess Margaret, the sister of Queen Elizabeth II, died at age 71.

2012 - President Barack Obama freed 10 states from some of the toughest requirements of the No Child Left Behind education law.

2012 - The Pentagon formally opened thousands of jobs to women in units that were closer to the front lines than ever before.

2017 - A federal appeals court refused to reinstate President Donald Trump’s ban on travelers from seven predominantly Muslim nations, unanimously rejecting the administration’s claim of presidential authority, questioning its motives and concluding that the order was unlikely to survive legal challenges.

2020 - The film "Parasite" from South Korea won the Best Picture Oscar, becoming the first foreign language film to take home the biggest honor in film.

2021 - The U.S. Senate moved ahead with a second impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump, rejecting arguments that the chamber could not proceed because Trump was no longer in office. House prosecutors opened the trial with graphic video of the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and Trump's own calls fr a rally crowd to march to the iconic building and "fight like hell" against his reelection defeat; Trump's lawyers insisted that his remarks were protected by the First Amendment.

1895 - In Massachusetts, W.G. Morgan invented volleyball.

1895 - The first college basketball game was played as Minnesota State School of Agriculture defeated the Porkers of Hamline College, 9-3.

1900 - Dwight F. Davis put up a new tennis trophy to go to the winner in matches against England. The trophy was a silver cup that weighed 36 pounds.

1924 - Frank Nighbor received the first NHL Hart Trophy. The award, that judges the most valuable player to his team, was the first individual award in the NHL.

1951 - The American League's St. Louis Browns sign 45-year-old pitcher Satchel Paige.

1960 - A verbal agreement was reached between representatives of the American and National Football Leagues. Both agreed not to tamper with player contracts.

1971 - Satchel Paige becomes the first Negro League player ever elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

1980 - Rick Barry of the Houston Rockets becomes the first player in NBA history to record 8 3-point field goals in a game.

1992 - Mike Gartner tied an NHL record when he reached the 30-goal mark for the 13th straight season. Only Bobby Hull and Phil Esposito had accomplished the feat.

2009 - New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez admitted he took banned substances from 2001 to 2003.

2018 - The Winter Olympic Games open in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
