1582 - Pope Gregory XIII issued a papal bull outlining his calendar reforms. (The Gregorian Calendar is the calendar in general use today.)

1803 - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Marbury v. Madison that any act of Congress which conflicts with the Constitution is null and void.

1821 - Mexico declared its independence from Spain.

1863 - The Arizona Territory was organized.

1868 - Andrew Johnson became the first U.S. president to have impeachment proceedings brought against him by the House of Representatives; Johnson was impeached following his attempted dismissal of Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. (Johnson was later acquitted by the Senate.)

1903 - The United States signed an agreement acquiring a naval station at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

1920 - The German Workers Party, which later became the Nazi Party, met in Munich to adopt its platform.

1945 - American soldiers liberated the Philippine capital of Manila from Japanese control during World War II.

1955 - Apple Computer co-founder Steve Jobs was born in San Francisco.

1961 - The Federal Communications Commission authorized the nation’s first full-scale trial of pay television in Hartford, Connecticut.

1981 - A jury in White Plains, New York, found Jean Harris guilty of second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of “Scarsdale Diet” author Dr. Herman Tarnower. (Sentenced to 15 years to life in prison, Harris was granted clemency by New York Gov. Mario Cuomo in December 1992.)

1981 - Buckingham Palace announced the engagement of Britain's Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer.

1988 - In a ruling that expanded legal protections for parody and satire, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously overturned a $150,000 award that the Rev. Jerry Falwell had won against Hustler magazine and its publisher, Larry Flynt.

1989 - A state funeral was held in Japan for Emperor Hirohito, who had died the month before at age 87.

1993 - Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney resigned after more than eight years in office.

1999 - Lauryn Hill won five Grammys for her debut solo album, "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill."

2006 - South Dakota lawmakers approved a ban on nearly all abortions.

2008 - Cuba's parliament named Raul Castro president, ending nearly 50 years of rule by his brother, Fidel.

2011 - Discovery, the world’s most traveled spaceship, thundered into orbit for the final time, heading toward the International Space Station on a journey marking the beginning of the end of the shuttle era.

2015 - The Justice Department announced that George Zimmerman, the former neighborhood watch volunteer who fatally shot Trayvon Martin in a 2012 confrontation, would not face federal charges.

2016 - Surgeons at the Cleveland Clinic performed the nation’s first uterus transplant on a 26-year-old woman, using an organ from a deceased donor. (However, the transplant failed.)

2020 - The White House sent lawmakers a $2.5 billion plan to respond to the coronavirus; it was immediately slammed by Democrats as insufficient.

2020 - Former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was convicted in New York on charges of rape and sexual assault against two women.

1978 - Kevin Porter of the New Jersey Nets sets an NBA record with 29 assists in a game.

1980 - The U.S. men's hockey team defeated Finland to win the gold medal at the Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, New York.

1980 - Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers became the first player in NHL history to score 100 points in a season before the age of 20.

1982 - Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers scored his 77th goal of the season to break the NHL single-season record of 76 held by Phil Esposito. (Gretzky would end the season with 92 goals and 212 points, the first player in NHL history to score more than 200 points in a season.)

1987 - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar of the Los Angeles recorded the first three-point shot of his NBA career and his 36,000th career point.

2013 - Jimmie Johnson wins his second Daytona 500; in the race, Danica Patrick became the first female driver to start from the pole position and also recorded the best-ever finish by a female driver (8th).
