1554 - Lady Jane Grey, queen of England for nine days (in 1553), was executed for high treason.

1733 - Led by philanthropist, James Edward Oglethorpe, the first English colonists arrived in Georgia, at the site of Savannah.

1809 - Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States (1861-1865), was born in a log cabin in Hardin (now LaRue) County, Kentucky.

1818 - Chile formally proclaimed its independence from Spain.

1870 - The Utah Territory granted women the right to vote. (It was revoked in 1887.)

1909 - The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded.

1912 - Pu Yi, the last emperor of the Manchu (Ch'ing) dynasty in China, renounced his throne following the establishment of a republic under Sun Yat-sen.

1915 - The cornerstone for the Lincoln Memorial was laid in Washington, D.C.

1973 - The first release of American prisoners from the Vietnam War took place.

1999 - The U.S. Senate voted to acquit President Bill Clinton in his impeachment trial on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice.

2000 - Charles M. Schulz, creator of the "Peanuts" comic strip, died at age 77.

2002 - Yugoslavian ex-president Slobodan Milosevic went on trial for war crimes.

2004 - Defying a California law, San Francisco officials began performing weddings for same-sex couples.

2019 - Mexico’s most notorious drug lord, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, was convicted in New York of running an industrial-scale smuggling operation; a jury whose members’ identities were kept secret as a security measure had deliberated for six days. (Guzman is serving a life sentence at the federal supermax prison facility in Florence, Colorado.)

2021 - Lawyers for Donald Trump defended him against impeachment at his Senate trial by accusing Democrats of waging a campaign of “hatred” against the former president and manipulating his words in the lead-up to the deadly siege of the U.S. Capitol.

2010 - The Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, British Columbia got off to a tragic start when a luger from the Republic of Georgia, Nodar Kumaritashvili, dies tragically in a crash during training run.
