1776 - The first scholastic fraternity in America, Phi Beta Kappa, was organized at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.

1782 - Martin Van Buren, the eighth president of the United States and the first to be born after the country was formed, was born in Kinderhook, New York.

1791 - Composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart died in Vienna, Austria at age 35.

1792 - President George Washington and Vice President John Adams were re-elected to second terms in office.

1831 - Former President John Quincy Adams took his seat as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives.

1848 - President James K. Polk triggered the Gold Rush of 1849 by confirming that gold had been discovered in California.

1872 - Having left New York on November 5, the brigantine Mary Celeste was found adrift off the coast of Portugal with everyone aboard mysteriously missing.

1901 - Walt Disney was born in Chicago.

1932 - German physicist Albert Einstein was granted a visa, making it possible for him to travel to the United States.

1933 - The 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, repealing the 18th Amendment and Prohibition, was ratified as Utah became the 36th state to approve it.

1952 - The Great Smog of London descended on the British capital; the unusually thick fog, which contained toxic pollutants, lasted five days and was blamed for causing thousands of deaths.

2006 - New York became the first city in the nation to ban artery-clogging trans fats at restaurants.

2008 - A judge in Las Vegas sentenced O.J. Simpson to 33 years in prison (with eligibility for parole after nine) for an armed robbery at a hotel room.

2008 - The Labor Department reported that an alarming half-million jobs had vanished in Nov. 2008 as unemployment hit a 15-year high of 6.7 percent.

2009 - An Italian jury convicted American student Amanda Knox of murdering her former roommate, English student Meredith Kercher, in 2007. (After a series of back-and-forth rulings, Knox and Sollecito were definitively acquitted in 2015 by Italy’s highest court.)

2010 - On the eve of talks with six world powers, Iran announced that it had produced its first batch of locally mined uranium ore for enrichment.

2013 - Nelson Mandela, the anti-apartheid leader who became South Africa’s first Black president, died at age 95.

2015 - A rare pressing of the Beatles’ White Album from Ringo Starr’s record collection sold at auction in New York for $790,000.

2015 - In the wake of a commando-style shooting rampage by a Muslim extremist couple in Southern California that left 14 people dead, The New York Times called for more gun regulation in its first Page 1 editorial in 95 years; Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. urged students, staff and faculty at his Christian school to get a permit to carry a concealed weapon on campus to counter any copycat attack.

2018 - Former President George H.W. Bush was mourned at a memorial service at Washington National Cathedral attended by President Donald Trump and former Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter along with their spouses; former president George W. Bush was among the speakers, eulogizing his dad as “the brightest of a thousand points of light.”

2019 - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that she had asked the relevant House committee chairs to begin drawing up articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, saying his actions left them “no choice” but to act swiftly; in response, Trump tweeted that Democrats had “gone crazy.”

1891 - Nebraska defeats Doane 32-0 to end the season at 2-2.


1908 - Football players at the University of Pittsburgh became the first college players to wear numbers on their uniforms.

1931 - Nebraska defeats Colorado State 20-7 in a postseason charity game; NU ends the season with a 8-2 record and won the Big 6 championship (5-0).

1970 - The Stanley Cup, Conn Smythe Trophy and the Bill Masterson trophy were stolen from the NHL Hall of Fame.

1970 - Willie Ellison of the Los Angeles Rams sets a single-game NFL record with 247 yards rushing.

1972 - Nebraska receiver/wingback Johnny Rodgers wins the Heisman Trophy.

1973 - Ron Santo became the first major league player to veto his trade.

1978 - Pete Rose signed with the Philadelphia Phillies. The contract was for four years and $3.2 million making Rose the highest paid athlete in team sports.

1981 - USC running back Marcus Allen wins the Heisman Trophy.

1983 - Steve Howe (Los Angeles Dodgers) was suspended for 1 year for cocaine use.

1983 - The video arcade game "NFL Football" was unveiled in Chicago. It was the first video arcade game to be licensed by the National Football League.

1987 - Notre Dame wide receiver Tim Brown wins the Heisman Trophy.

1992 - #11 Nebraska defeated Kansas State 38-24 in a game played in Tokyo, Japan; NU won the Big 8 Championship with the win (6-1).

1995 - Dan Marino (Miami Dolphins) passed for 300 yards in a game for the 52nd time to set an NFL record.

2000 - Karl Malone of the Utah Jazz moved past Wilt Chamberlain into second place on the NBA's career scoring list.

2002 - Michal Handzus (Philadelphia Flyers) became only the second NHL player to score an overtime goal on a penalty shot. The Flyers beat the New York Rangers 3-2.

2006 - Pitcher Greg Maddux sings a one-year, $10 million contract with the San Diego Padres.

2009 - #3 Texas defeated #21 Nebraska 13-12 in the Big 12 Conference Championship Game in Arlington, Texas.

2017 - The IOC announces Russia would be banned from the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in South Korea over charges of state-sponsored doping.
