1783 - Gen. George Washington delivered his farewell address to his officers at Fraunces Tavern in New York City.

1816 - James Monroe was elected by the Electoral College as the fifth president of the United States.

1875 - William Marcy "Boss" Tweed of New York's Tammany Hall escaped from jail and fled the country.

1918 - President Woodrow Wilson set sail for France for the Versailles peace conference.

1942 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered the dismantling of the Works Progress Administration, which had been created to provide jobs during the Depression.

1945 - The U.S. Senate approved U.S. participation in the United Nations.

1954 - The first Burger King stand was opened in Miami by James McLamore and David Edgerton.

1956 - Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins gathered for the first and only time for a jam session at Sun Records in Memphis.

1965 - The United States launched Gemini 7 with Air Force Lt. Col. Frank Borman and Navy Cmdr. James A. Lovell aboard on a two-week mission. (While Gemini 7 was in orbit, its sister ship, Gemini 6A, was launched on Dec. 15 on a one-day mission; the two spacecraft were able to rendezvous within a foot of each other.)

1978 - Dianne Feinstein became San Francisco's first female mayor.

1980 - The rock group Led Zeppelin announced it was disbanding after the death in September of drummer John Bonham.

1986 - Both houses of Congress moved to establish special committees to conduct their own investigations of the Iran-Contra affair.

1991 - Associated Press correspondent Terry Anderson is released after seven years as a hostage in Lebanon.

1992 - President George H.W. Bush ordered American troops to lead a mercy mission to Somalia, threatening military action against warlords and gangs who were blocking food for starving millions.

1993 - Rock musician and composer Frank Zappa died at age 52.

1995 - The first NATO troops landed in the Balkans to begin setting up a peace mission.

2000 - In a pair of legal setbacks for Al Gore, a Florida state judge refused to overturn George W. Bush's certified victory in Florida and the U.S. Supreme Court set aside a ruling that had allowed manual recounts.

2001 - The United States froze the financial assets of organizations allegedly linked to the terrorist group Hamas.

2003 - Interpol put the former president of Liberia, Charles Taylor, on its most-wanted list.

2011 - Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s party hung onto its majority in Russia’s parliamentary election, but faced accusations from opponents of rigging the vote.

2018 - Long lines of people wound through the Capitol Rotunda to view the casket of former President George H.W. Bush; former Sen. Bob Dole steadied himself out of his wheelchair to salute his old friend and one-time rival.

1943 - Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis announced that any club was free to employ black players.

1945 - Army fullback Doc Blanchard wins the Heisman Trophy.

1956 - Notre Dame quarterback Paul Hornung wins the Heisman Trophy.

1971 - #1 Nebraska defeats Hawaii 45-3.

1976 - #13 Nebraska defeats Hawaii 68-3.


1977 - Tony Dorsett (Dallas Cowboys) rushed for 206 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles. He became only the third rookie to rush for more than 200 yards in a game.

1982 - #3 Nebraska defeats Hawaii 37-16.

1982 - Georgia running back Herschel Walker wins the Heisman Trophy.

1987 - Kareem Abdul Jabaar's was held to only 7 points in a game establishing an NBA record of 787 straight games with double digit points.

1996 - The Orlando Magic ties the NBA record for fewest points scored since the inception of the 24-second shot clock in a 84-57 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

1997 - The National Basketball Association (NBA) suspended Latrell Sprewell of the Golden State Warriors for one year for choking and threatening to kill his coach, P.J. Carlesimo.

1997 - John Elway (Denver Broncos) surpassed 3,000 yards for the season. It was his 12th consecutive season to pass for more than 3,000 yards.

1997 - Barry Sanders (Detroit Lions) set an NFL record when he rushed for over 100 yards in 12 consecutive games.

1999 - #3 Nebraska defeats #12 Texas 22-6 in San Antonio to win the Big 12 Conference Championship Game.

2010 - #10 Oklahoma defeated #13 Nebraska 23-20 in Arlington, Texas to win the Big 12 Conference Championship Game; it would mark Nebraska's final football game in the Big 12.


2011 - After going more than two years and 26 tournaments without a victory, Tiger Woods won the Chevron World Challenge.

2018 - Ownership group Seattle Hockey Partners led by billionaire businessman Davis Bonderman is unanimously granted an NHL license by the Board of Governors; to start play 2020-21 season at KeyArena.
