1783 - George Washington delivered his farewell address to his officers at Fraunces Tavern in New York City.

1816 - James Monroe of Virginia was elected the fifth president of the United States.

1875 - William Marcy "Boss" Tweed of New York's Tammany Hall escaped from jail and fled the country.

1918 - President Woodrow Wilson set sail for France to attend the Versailles peace conference.

1942 - U.S. bombers struck the Italian mainland for the first time in World War II.

1942 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered the dismantling of the Works Progress Administration, which had been created to provide jobs during the Depression.

1945 - The U.S. Senate approved U.S. participation in the United Nations.

1956 - Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins gathered for the first and only time for a jam session at Sun Records in Memphis.

1965 - The United States launched Gemini 7 with Air Force Lt. Col. Frank Borman and Navy Cmdr. James A. Lovell aboard on a two-week mission. (While Gemini 7 was in orbit, its sister ship, Gemini 6A, was launched on Dec. 15 on a one-day mission; the two spacecraft were able to rendezvous within a foot of each other.)

1978 - Dianne Feinstein became San Francisco's first female mayor when she was named to replace George Moscone, who had been assassinated.

1980 -The rock group Led Zeppelin announced it was disbanding after the death in September of drummer John Bonham.

1980 - The bodies of four American nuns slain in El Salvador two days earlier were unearthed. (Five national guardsmen were later convicted of murder.)

1986 - Both houses of Congress moved to establish special committees to conduct their own investigations of the Iran-Contra affair.

1991 - Associated Press correspondent Terry Anderson is released after seven years as a hostage in Lebanon.

2001 - The United States froze the financial assets of organizations allegedly linked to the terrorist group Hamas.

2003 - Interpol put the former president of Liberia, Charles Taylor, on its most-wanted list.

2015 - President Barack Obama signed legislation reviving the federal Export-Import Bank five months after Congress allowed it to expire.

2015 - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that an outbreak of E. coli linked to the Mexican food chain Chipotle had expanded to nine states, with a total of 52 reported illnesses.

2018 - Long lines of people wound through the Capitol Rotunda to view the casket of former President George H.W. Bush; former Sen. Bob Dole steadied himself out of his wheelchair to salute his old friend and one-time rival.

2019 - The House Judiciary Committee held its first hearing in the impeachment inquiry, with three leading legal scholars testifying that President Donald Trump’s attempts to have Ukraine investigate Democratic rivals were grounds for impeachment; a fourth expert called by Republicans warned against rushing the process.

1909 - The Montreal Canadiens hockey franchise was established, the oldest still operating franchise of the NHL.

1943 - Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis announced that any club was free to employ black players.

1945 - Army fullback Doc Blanchard wins the Heisman Trophy.

1956 - Notre Dame quarterback Paul Hornung wins the Heisman Trophy.

1964 - Major league baseball established a free-agent draft that would take effect in 1965.

1971 - #1 Nebraska defeated Hawaii 45-3.

1976 - #13 Nebraska defeated Hawaii 68-3.


1977 - Tony Dorsett of the Dallas Cowboys rushed for 206 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles, becoming just the third rookie in NFL history to rush for more than 200 yards in a game.

1982 - Georgia running back Herschel Walker wins the Heisman Trophy.

1982 - #3 Nebraska defeated Hawaii 37-16.

1987 - Kareem Abdul Jabbar was held to just seven points in an NBA game, snapping his record of 787 consecutive games scoring double-digit points.

1996 - The Orlando Magic tie the NBA record for fewest points scored in the 24-second shot clock era in an 84-57 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

1997 - The NBA suspended Latrell Sprewell of the Golden State Warriors for one year after attacking his coach, P.J. Carlesimo.

1997 - John Elway of the Denver Broncos surpassed 3,000 yards passing for a record 12th consecutive season.

1997 - Barry Sanders of the Detroit Lions set an NFL record when he rushed for over 100 yards in a 12th consecutive game.

1999 - #3 Nebraska defeated #12 Texas 22-6 in San Antonio to win the Big 12 Conference Championship Game.

2010 - #10 Oklahoma defeated #13 Nebraska 23-20 in Arlington, Texas in the Big 12 Conference Championship Game; the game marked Nebraska's final football game in the Big 12.


2018 - Ownership group Seattle Hockey Partners led by billionaire businessman Davis Bonderman is unanimously granted an NHL license by the Board of Governors; to start play 2020-21 season at KeyArena
