1813 - British troops burned the city of Buffalo, New York during the War of 1812.

1853 - The United States bought some 45,000 square miles of land from Mexico in the Gadsden Purchase.

1860 - Ten days after South Carolina seceded from the Union, the state militia seized the United States Arsenal in Charleston.

1903 - About 600 people died when fire broke out at the Iroquois Theater in Chicago.

1911 - Sun Yat-sen was elected the first president of the Republic of China.

1922 - The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was established through the confederation of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and the Transcaucasian Federation; the Soviet Union would last for nearly seven decades as a world superpower before dissolving in December 1991.

1940 - California's first freeway, the Arroyo Seco Parkway connecting Los Angeles and Pasadena, was officially opened.

1972 - President Richard Nixon ordered a halt to the heavy bombing of North Vietnam.

1993 - Israel and the Vatican signed an agreement of mutual recognition to put an end to Jewish-Christian hostilities.

1994 - A gunman walked into a pair of suburban Boston abortion clinics and opened fire, killing two employees. (John C. Salvi III was later convicted of murder; he died in prison, an apparent suicide.)

2003 - The federal government announced it would ban the sale of ephedra, an herbal stimulant linked to 155 deaths and dozens of heart attacks and strokes.

2004 - A fire broke out during a rock concert at a nightclub in Buenos Aires, Argentina, killing 194 people.

2006 - Former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was executed.

2011 - North Korea warned the world there would be no softening of its position toward South Korea’s government following Kim Jong Il’s death as Pyongyang strengthened his son and heir’s authority with a new title: “Great Leader.”

2015 - Bill Cosby was charged with drugging and sexually assaulting a woman at his suburban Philadelphia home in 2004; it was the first criminal case brought against the comedian out of the torrent of allegations that destroyed his good-guy image as “America’s Dad.” (Cosby’s first trial ended in a mistrial after jurors deadlocked; he was convicted on three charges at his retrial in April 2018 and was sentenced to three to 10 years in prison, but the Pennsylvania Supreme Court overturned the conviction in June 2021 and Cosby went free.)

2020 - Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri said he would raise objections when Congress met to affirm President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, forcing House and Senate votes. President Donald Trump asked the Supreme Court to overturn his election loss in Wisconsin; it was his second unsuccessful appeal in as many days to the high court over the result in the battleground state.

2020 - Samuel Little, who authorities said was the most prolific serial killer in U.S. history with nearly 60 confirmed victims, died at the age of 80 in California, where he was serving a life sentence.

1926 - The Chicago Tribune broke a story that the Detroit Tigers threw a 4-game series to the Chicago White Sox in 1917.

1954 - The 24-second shot clock was used for the first time in professional basketball.

1956 - The New York Giants defeat the Chicago Bears 47-7 in the NFL Championship Game.

1962 - The Green Bay Packers defeat the New York Giants 16-7 in the NFL Championship Game.

1978 - Ohio State University fired Woody Hayes as its football coach one day after Hayes punched a Clemson University football player during their Gaytor Bowl matchup.

1983 - Julius "Dr. J" Erving (Philadelphia 76ers) became the 9th basketball player to reach 25,000 points.

1997 - Michael Jordan (Chicago Bulls) scored more than 10 points in 788 consecutive games.

1998 - #5 Arizona defeats #14 Nebraska 23-20 in the Holiday Bowl; NU finishes season with a 9-4 record and a #19/#20 ranking in the final polls.

2000 - #9 Nebraska defeated #18 Northwestern 66-17 to win the Alamo Bowl; NU finishes the season with a 10-2 record and ranked #7/#8 in the final polls.

2009 - #20 Nebraska defeats #22 Arizona 33-0 to win the Holiday Bowl; NU finishes season at 10-4 and ranked #14 in the final polls.

2010 - Washington defeats #17 Nebraska 19-7 in the Holiday Bowl; NU finishes season with a 10-4 record and ranked #19/#20 in the final polls.


2010 - Top-ranked Connecticut's record 90-game winning streak in women's basketball ended with a 71-59 loss to No. 9 Stanford.

2016 - Tennessee defeats #24 Nebraska 38-24 in the Music City Bowl; NU ends season with a 9-4 record.

2018 - Patrick Mahomes becomes just the second quarterback in NFL history to throw for 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in a season.

2020 - San Antonio assistant Becky Hammon becomes first female to coach an NBA team after Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich is ejected in a 121-107 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.
