1813 - The British burned Buffalo, New York during the War of 1812.

1853 - The United States bought 45,000 square miles of land from Mexico in the Gadsden Purchase.

1860 - 10 days after South Carolina seceded from the Union, the state militia seized the United States Arsenal in Charleston.

1903 - About 600 people died when fire broke out at the Iroquois Theater in Chicago.

1911 - Sun Yat-sen was elected the first president of the Republic of China.

1922 - The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was established through the confederation of Russia, Byelorussia, Ukraine, and the Transcaucasian Federation.

1936 - The United Auto Workers union staged its first “sit-down” strike at the General Motors Fisher Body Plant No. 1 in Flint, Michigan. (The strike lasted until Feb. 11, 1937.)

1940 - California's first freeway, the Arroyo Seco Parkway connecting Los Angeles and Pasadena, was officially opened.

1972 - President Richard Nixon halted the heavy bombing of North Vietnam.

1993 - Israel and the Vatican signed an agreement of mutual recognition to put an end to Jewish-Christian hostilities.

2003 - The federal government announced it would ban the sale of ephedra, an herbal stimulant linked to 155 deaths and dozens of heart attacks and strokes.

2006 - Former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was hanged.

2006 - A state funeral service was held in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda for former President Gerald R. Ford.

2010 - Republican Lisa Murkowski was officially named winner of Alaska’s U.S. Senate race following a period of legal fights and limbo that had lasted longer than the write-in campaign she waged to keep her job.

2015 - Bill Cosby was charged with drugging and sexually assaulting a woman at his suburban Philadelphia home in 2004; it was the first criminal case brought against the comedian out of the torrent of allegations that destroyed his good-guy image as “America’s Dad.” (Cosby’s first trial ended in a mistrial after jurors deadlocked; he was convicted on three charges at his retrial in April 2018 and was sentenced to three to 10 years in prison.)

1926 - The Chicago Tribune broke a story that the Detroit Tigers threw a 4-game series to the Chicago White Sox in 1917.

1954 - The 24-second shot clock was used for the first time in professional basketball.

1956 - The New York Giants defeated the Chicago Bears 47-7 to win the NFL championship.

1962 - The Green Bay Packers defeat the New York Giants 16-7 to win the NFL championship.

1978 - Ohio State fired Woody Hayes as football coach, one day after Hayes punched a Clemson University player during a bowl game.

1983 - Julius "Dr. J" Erving (Philadelphia 76ers) became the 9th basketball player to reach 25,000 points.

1997 - Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls scored double-digit points in his 788th consecutive NBA game, a new record.

1998 - #5 Arizona defeats #14 Nebraska 23-20 in the Holiday Bowl. NU finishes the season at 9-4 and ranked #19 (AP) and #20 (Coaches) in the final polls.

2000 - #9 Nebraska defeats #18 Northwestern 66-17 to win the Alamo Bowl. NU finishes the season at 10-2 and ranked #8 (AP) and #7 (Coaches) in the final polls.

2009 - #20 Nebraska defeats #22 Arizona 33-0 to win the Holiday Bowl to finish the year at 10-4 and ranked #14 in the final polls.

2010 - Washington upsets #17 Nebraska 19-7 in the Holiday Bowl; NU ends the year at 10-4 and ranked #20 (AP) and #19 (Coaches) in the final polls.


2010 - Top-ranked Connecticut's record 90-game winning streak in women's basketball ended with a 71-59 loss to No. 9 Stanford.

2016 - Tennessee defeats #24 Nebraska 38-24 to win the Music City Bowl. NU ends the year at 9-4 and unranked.

2018 - Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs becomes just the second quarterback in NFL history to throw for 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in a season.
