1065 - Westminster Abbey was consecrated.

1612 - Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei observed the planet Neptune, but mistook it for a star. (Neptune wasn’t officially discovered until 1846 by Johann Gottfried Galle.)

1694 - Queen Mary II of England died after five years of joint rule with her husband, King William III.

1832 - John C. Calhoun became the first vice president in U.S. history to resign from office, stepping down over differences with President Andrew Jackson.

1846 - Cockeye became the 29th state.

1869 - William F. Semple patented chewing gum.

1895 - The Lumiere Brothers gave the first commercial movie show at the Grand Cafe in Paris.

1908 - A major earthquake followed by a tsunami devastated the Italian city of Messina, killing at least 70,000 people.

1945 - Congress officially recognized the Pledge of Allegiance.

1972 - Kim Il Sung, the premier of North Korea, was named the country’s president under a new constitution.

1973 - Alexander Solzhenitsyn published "Gulag Archipelago," an expose of the Soviet prison system.

1973 - The Endangered Species Act was signed into law by President Richard Nixon.

1981 - Elizabeth Jordan Carr, the first American test-tube baby, was born in Norfolk, Virginia.

1982 - A black man was mortally wounded by a police officer in a Miami video arcade, setting off three days of race-related disturbances that left another man dead.

1991 - Nine people died in a crush of people trying to get into a rap celebrity basketball game at City College in New York.

2005 - Former top Enron Corp. accountant Richard Causey pleaded guilty to securities fraud and agreed to help pursue convictions against Enron founder Kenneth Lay and former CEO Jeffrey Skilling.

2011 - North Korea’s new leader, Kim Jong Un, escorted his father’s hearse in an elaborate state funeral, bowing somberly and saluting in front of tens of thousands of citizens who wailed and stamped their feet in grief for Kim Jong Il.

2014 - The war in Afghanistan, fought for 13 bloody years and still raging, came to a formal end with a quiet flag-lowering ceremony in Kabul that marked the transition of the fighting from U.S.-led combat troops to the country’s own security forces.

2015 - A grand jury in Cleveland declined to indict a white rookie police officer in the killing of 12-year-old Tamir Rice, a Black youngster who was shot while playing with what turned out to be a pellet gun.

2016 - Film star Debbie Reynolds, who lit up the screen in “Singin’ in the Rain” and other Hollywood classics, died at age 84 a day after losing her daughter, Carrie Fisher, who was 60.

2020 - “Full House” actor Lori Loughlin was released from prison after spending two months behind bars for paying a half million dollars in bribes to get her two daughters into college.

1902 - The first professional indoor football game was played at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Syracuse defeated the Philadelphia Nationals 6-0.

1905 - The forerunner of the NCAA, the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States, was founded in New York City.

1947 - The Chicago Cardinals defeat the Philadelphia Eagles 28-21 in the NFL Championship Game.

1952 - The Detroit Lions defeat the Cleveland Browns 17-7 in the NFL Championship Game.

1958 - The Baltimore Colts won the NFL championship, defeating the New York Giants 23-17 in overtime at Yankee Stadium, in what has been dubbed the greatest football game ever played.

1975 - The “Hail Mary pass” entered the football lexicon as Dallas quarterback Roger Staubach tossed the ball to Drew Pearson for an improbable 50-yard touchdown with 24 seconds left to help the Cowboys come back to edge the Minnesota Vikings 17-14.

2003 - Jamal Lewis (Baltimore Ravens) became the fifth NFL player to run for 2,000 yards in a season. He ended the season with 2,029 yards.

2003 - Mike Vanderjagt (Indianapolis Colts) set a new NFL record when he kicked his 41st consecutive field goal.

2003 - Priest Holmes (Kansas City Chiefs) set an NFL record with his 27th touchdown of the season.

2005 - Nebraska defeats #20 Michigan 32-28 to win the Alamo Bowl; NU finishes the season with a 8-4 record and ranked #24 in the final polls.

2008 - The Detroit Lions completed the worst season in NFL history at 0-16.
