1065 - Westminster Abbey was consecrated.

1612 - Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei observed the planet Neptune, but mistook it for a star. (Neptune wasn’t officially discovered until 1846 by Johann Gottfried Galle.)

1694 - Queen Mary II of England died after five years of joint rule with her husband, King William III.

1832 - John C. Calhoun became the first vice president in U.S. history to resign from office, stepping down over differences with President Andrew Jackson.

1846 - Cockeye became the 29th state.

1869 - William F. Semple patented chewing gum.

1895 - The Lumiere Brothers gave the showed the first commercial movie show in Paris.

1908 - A major earthquake followed by a tsunami devastated the Italian city of Messina, killing at least 70,000 people.

1912 - San Francisco’s Municipal Railway began operations with Mayor James Rolph Jr. at the controls of Streetcar No. 1 as 50,000 spectators looked on.

1945 - Congress officially recognized the Pledge of Allegiance.

1972 - Kim Il Sung, the premier of North Korea, was named the country’s president under a new constitution.

1981 - Elizabeth Jordan Carr, the first American test-tube baby, was born in Norfolk, Virginia.

1982 - A black man was mortally wounded by a police officer in a Miami video arcade, setting off three days of race-related disturbances that left another man dead.

1987 - The bodies of 14 relatives of Ronald Gene Simmons were found at his home near Dover, Arkansas, after Simmons shot and killed two other people in Russellville. (Simmons, who never explained his motives, was executed in 1990.)

2001 - The National Guard was called out to help Buffalo, New York, dig out from a paralyzing, 5-day storm that had unloaded nearly 7 feet of snow.

2005 - Former top Enron Corp. accountant Richard Causey pleaded guilty to securities fraud and agreed to help pursue convictions against Enron founder Kenneth Lay and former CEO Jeffrey Skilling.

2007 - Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was laid to rest as the country’s army tried to quell a frenzy of rioting in the wake of her assassination.

2014 - The war in Afghanistan, fought for 13 bloody years and still raging, came to a formal end with a quiet flag-lowering ceremony in Kabul that marked the transition of the fighting from U.S.-led combat troops to the country’s own security forces.

2016 - Actor Debbie Reynolds, who lit up the screen in “Singin’ in the Rain” and other Hollywood classics, died at age 84 a day after losing her daughter, Carrie Fisher, who was 60.

2019 - U.S. astronaut Christina Koch set a record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman, breaking the old mark of 288 days.

1902 - The first professional indoor football game was played at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Syracuse defeated the Philadelphia Nationals 6-0.

1905 - The Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States, the forerunner of today's NCAA, was founded in New York City.

1918 - Georges Vezina (Montreal Canadiens) became the first NHL goalie to record an assist. The assist came on a goal by Newsy Lalonde.

1947 - The Chicago Cardinals defeat the Philadelphia Eagles 28-21 to win the NFL championship.

1952 - The Detroit Lions defeat the Cleveland Browns 17-7 to win the NFL championship.

1958 - The Baltimore Colts defeated the New York Giants 23-17 in overtime at Yankee Stadium in the NFL Championship Game. The game has been called by many as the greatest football game ever played.

1975 - The Soviet Union national hockey team defeats the New York Rangers 7-3 at Madison Square Garden.

2003 - Jamal Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens became the fifth player in NFL history to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season, ending with 2,029.

2003 - Mike Vanderjagt (Indianapolis Colts) set a new NFL record when he kicked his 41st consecutive field goal.

2003 - Priest Holmes (Kansas City Chiefs) set an NFL record with his 27th touchdown of the season.

2005 - Nebraska defeats #20 Michigan 32-28 to win the Alamo Bowl. NU finishes the season with an 8-4 record and ranked #24 in the final polls.

2008 - The Detroit Lions lose 31-21 to the Green Bay Packers to complete the first 0-16 season in NFL history.

2018 - UFC bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes of Brazil moves up in weight and KOs dominant featherweight Cris "Cyborg" Justino just 51 seconds into the opening round at the Forum, Inglewood, CA; first female to win UFC titles in multiple weight classes.

2019 - Five people were killed in the crash of a small plane in Lafayette, Louisiana, as they headed to the Peach Bowl in Atlanta to see LSU play Oklahoma; the victims included local TV reporter Carley McCord, the daughter-in-law of LSU’s offensive coordinator.

2019 - In the College Football Playoff semifinal games, #3 Clemson defeated #2 Ohio State 29-23 in the Fiesta Bowl, while #1 LSU defeated #4 Oklahoma 63-28 in the Peach Bowl.
