1831 - Charles Darwin began his voyage aboard the HMS Beagle.

1900 - Prohibitionist Carry Nation smashed her first saloon.

1932 - Radio City Music Hall opened in New York City.

1945 - The World Bank was created with an agreement signed by 28 nations.

1949 - The Netherlands transferred sovereignty to Indonesia after more than 300 years of Dutch rule.

1958 - American physicist James Van Allen reported the discovery of a second radiation belt around Earth, in addition to one found earlier in the year.

1979 - The Soviet Union took control of Afghanistan, installing Afghan politician Babrak Karmal as president.

1985 - Palestinian gunmen opened fire inside the Rome and Vienna airports in terrorist attacks that killed 19 people; four attackers were slain by police and security personnel.

1985 - American naturalist Dian Fossey, 53, who had studied gorillas in the wild in Rwanda, was found hacked to death.

1995 - Israeli jeeps sped out of the West Bank town of Ramallah, capping a seven-week pullout giving Yasser Arafat control over 90 percent of the West Bank’s 1 million Palestinian residents and one-third of its land.

1996 - Rwanda's first genocide trial opened for the 1994 slaughter of more than 800,000 Tutsis.

1999 - Space shuttle Discovery and its seven-member crew returned to Earth after fixing the Hubble Space Telescope.

2001 - The U.S. announced plans to hold Taliban and al-Qaeda prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

2002 - A defiant North Korea ordered U.N. nuclear inspectors to leave the country and said it would restart a laboratory capable of producing plutonium for nuclear weapons; the U.N. nuclear watchdog said its inspectors were “staying put” for the time being.

2016 - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, accompanied by President Barack Obama, visited Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, where he offered his “sincere and everlasting condolences to the souls of those who lost their lives” in Japan’s 1941 attack; Abe did not apologize, but conceded his country “must never repeat the horrors of war again.”

1892 - Biddle University defeated Livingstone College 5-0 in the first black college football game.

1953 - The Detroit Lions defeated the Cleveland Browns 17-16 in the NFL championship game.

1959 - The Baltimore Colts defeated the New York Giants 31-16 in the NFL championship game, scoring 24 unanswered points in the fourth quarter.

1962 - Oregon State quarterback Terry Baker wins the Heisman Trophy.

1964 - The Cleveland Browns defeat the Baltimore Colts 27-0 to win the NFL championship game.

1971 - The inaugural Fiesta Bowl is played, which saw Arizona State defeat Florida State 45-38.

1974 - Ohio State running back Archie Griffin wins the Heisman Trophy.

1980 - #8 Nebraska defeats #17 Mississippi State 31-17 to win the Sun Bowl.

1981 - Wayne Gretzky (Edmonton Oilers) became the fastest NHL player to get to 100 points in a season. It only took him 38 games.

1987 - Steve Largent establishes an NFL record with his 752nd career reception.

1990 - The Edmonton Oilers become the fastest team in NHL history to record 500 franchise wins, doing so in just 915 games (500-295-129, a .612 winning percentage).

1991 - Dave Shula, at age 32, becomes the youngest head coach in NFL history with the Cincinnati Bengals.

1998 - The Dallas Cowboys became the first team to sweep all of their NFC East games in a season.

1998 - Emmitt Smith (Dallas Cowboys) set an NFL record for career touchdowns.

2000 - Mario Lemeiux (Pittsburgh Penguins) returned to the National Hockey League (NHL) as a player after over 3 years of retirement. He was the first owner-player in the modern era of pro sports. Lemieux had purchased the Pittsburgh Penguins during his retirement from playing.

2002 - Mississippi defeats Nebraska 27-23 in the Independence Bowl; NU finishes the season at 7-7, the first non-winning season in 40 years.

2014 - #24 USC defeats #25 Nebraska 45-42 in the Holiday Bowl; Barney Cotton served as interim head coach for the Huskers following the firing of head coach Bo Pelini.
