1822 - Scientist Louis Pasteur was born in Dole, France.

1831 - Charles Darwin began his voyage aboard the HMS Beagle.

1900 - Prohibitionist Carry Nation smashed her first saloon.

1904 - James Barrie’s play “Peter Pan: The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up” opened at the Duke of York’s Theater in London.

1932 - Radio City Music Hall opened in New York City.

1945 - The World Bank was created with an agreement signed by 28 nations.

1949 - The Netherlands transferred sovereignty to Indonesia after more than 300 years of Dutch rule.

1958 - American physicist James Van Allen reported the discovery of a second radiation belt around Earth, in addition to one found earlier in the year.

1979 - The Soviet Union took control of Afghanistan, installing Afghan politician Babrak Karmal as president.

1985 - Palestinian gunmen opened fire inside the Rome and Vienna airports in terrorist attacks that killed 19 people; four attackers were slain by police and security personnel.

1985 - American naturalist Dian Fossey, 53, who had studied gorillas in the wild in Rwanda, was found hacked to death.

1995 - Israeli jeeps sped out of the West Bank town of Ramallah, capping a seven-week pullout giving Yasser Arafat control over 90 percent of the West Bank’s 1 million Palestinian residents and one-third of its land.

1996 - Rwanda's first genocide trial opened for the 1994 slaughter of more than 800,000 Tutsis.

1999 - Space shuttle Discovery and its seven-member crew returned to Earth after fixing the Hubble Space Telescope.

2001 - The U.S. announced plans to hold Taliban and al-Qaeda prisoners at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

2002 - A defiant North Korea ordered U.N. nuclear inspectors to leave the country and said it would restart a laboratory capable of producing plutonium for nuclear weapons; the U.N. nuclear watchdog said its inspectors were “staying put” for the time being.

2012 - Retired Army general Norman Schwarzkopf, who as head of United States Central Command led forces against Iraq in the Gulf War, died in Tampa, Florida at age 78.

2016 - Actor Carrie Fisher died in a hospital four days after suffering a medical emergency aboard a flight to Los Angeles; she was 60. (Her mother, Debbie Reynolds, would die the following day.)

2021 - U.S. health officials cut isolation restrictions for asymptomatic Americans infected with the coronavirus from 10 to five days, and similarly shortened the time that close contacts needed to quarantine.

1953 - The Detroit Lions defeated the Cleveland Browns 17-16 in the NFL Championship Game.

1959 - The Baltimore Colts defeated the New York Giants 31-16 in the NFL Championship Game.

1962 - Oregon State quarterback Terry Baker wins the Heisman Trophy.

1964 - The Cleveland Browns defeat the Baltimore Colts 27-0 in the NFL Championship Game.

1971 - The inaugural Fiesta Bowl is played, with Arizona State defeating Florida State 45-38.

1974 - Ohio State running back Archie Griffin wins the Heisman Trophy.
1981 - Wayne Gretzky (Edmonton Oilers) became the fastest NHL player to get to 100 points in a season. It only took him 38 games.

1987 - Steve Largent sets all-time NFL record for career catches when he catches his 752nd pass.

1998 - The Dallas Cowboys became the first team to sweep all of their NFC East games in a season.

2000 - Mario Lemeiux (Pittsburgh Penguins) returned to the National Hockey League (NHL) as a player after over 3 years of retirement. He was the first owner-player in the modern era of pro sports. Lemieux had purchased the Pittsburgh Penguins during his retirement from playing.
