1492 - Christopher Columbus established the first Spanish settlement in the New World.

1776 - George Washington defeated the Hessians at Trent, New Jersey.

1799 - George Washington was eulogized by Col. Henry Lee as "first in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen."

1865 - James H. Nason received a patent for a coffee percolator.

1917 - The U.S. government took over operation of the nation's railroads.

1941 - During World War II, Winston Churchill became the first British prime minister to address a joint session of Congress.

1947 - Heavy snow blanketed the Northeast, burying New York City under nearly 26 inches of snow in 16 hours; the storm was blamed for 80 deaths.

1966 - The first Kwanzaa is celebrated.

1972 - Harry S. Truman, the 33rd president of the United States, died in Kansas City, Missouri at age 88.

1980 - Iranian television footage was broadcast in the United States, showing a dozen of the American hostages sending messages to their families.

1985 - Ford Motor Co. began selling its Taurus and Sable sedans and station wagons.

1985 - Zoologist Dian Fossey was found murdered in Rwanda.

1996 - Six-year-old beauty pageant contestant JonBenet Ramsey was found murdered in the basement of her home in Boulder, Colorado. (The slaying remains unsolved.)

2004 - A 9.1 magnitude earthquake struck in the Indian Ocean, the most powerful recorded quake in 40 years; the event would trigger a tsunami with 100-foot high waves in some areas that ultimately led to nearly 300,000 deaths.

2006 - Gerald R. Ford, the 38th president of the United States, died in Rancho Mirage, California at age 93.

1908 - Jack Johnson became the first black heavyweight boxing champion when he knocked out Tommy Burns in Sydney, Australia.

1928 - Johnny Weissmuller announced his retirement from amateur swimming. At the time he held all world swimming records for free-style swimming from 50 to 880 yards.

1943 - The Chicago Bears defeat the Washington Redskins 41-21 to win their sixth NFL championship.

1954 - The Cleveland Browns defeat the Detroit Lions 56-10 to win the NFL championship.

1955 - The Cleveland Browns defeat the Los Angeles Rams 38-14 to win the NFL championship.

1960 - The Philadelphia Eagles defeat the Green Bay Packers 17-13 to win the NFL championship.

1964 - The Buffalo Bills defeat the San Diego Chargers 20-7 to win the AFL championship.

1965 - The Buffalo Bills defeat the San Diego Chargers 23-0 to win the AFL championship for the second straight year.

1975 - #7 Arizona State defeats #6 Nebraska 17-14 to win the Fiesta Bowl. NU finshes the season at (10-2) and ranked #9 in the final polls.

1986 - Doug Jarvis, age 31, set a National Hockey League (NHL) record as he skated in his 916th consecutive game. Jarvis eventually set the individual record for most consecutive games played with 964.

2001 - Patrick Roy (Colorado Avalanche) became the first goalie to win 500 NHL games.

2004 - Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts broke Dan Marino's single-season touchdown pass record when he threw his 48th and 49th of the season in a victory over the San Diego Chargers.

2015 - Nebraska defeats UCLA 37-29 to win the Foster Farms Bowl. NU finishes the season with a (6-7) record.
