1492 - Christopher Columbus established the first Spanish settlement in the New World.

1776 - Gen. George Washington defeated the Hessians at Trenton during the American Revolutionary War.

1799 - Former President George Washington is eulogized by Col. Henry Lee as "first in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen."

1865 - James H. Nason received a patent for a coffee percolator.

1917 - During World War I, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation authorizing the government to take over operation of the nation’s railroads.

1941 - During World War II, Winston Churchill became the first British prime minister to address a joint meeting of the U.S. Congress.

1966 - The first Kwanzaa celebration is observed.

1972 - Harry S. Truman, the 33rd president of the United States, died in Kansas City, Missouri at age 88.

1994 - French commandos stormed a hijacked Air France jetliner on the ground in Marseille, killing four Algerian hijackers and freeing 170 hostages.

1996 - Six-year-old beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey was found beaten and strangled in the basement of her family’s home in Boulder, Colorado. (To date, the slaying remains unsolved.)

2004 - A 9.1-magnitude earthquake struck in the Indian Ocean, the largest recorded quake in over 40 years, triggering a 100-foot high tsunami that ultimately killed more than 280,000 people.

2006 - Gerald R. Ford, the 38th president of the United States, died in Rancho Mirage, California at age 93.

2018 - Japan announced that it was leaving the International Whaling Commission in order to resume commercial whale hunts for the first time in 30 years, but said it would no longer go to the Antarctic for annual killings that had been harshly criticized.

2021 - South African Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu died at 90; the retired archbishop had been an uncompromising foe of apartheid and a modern-day activist for racial justice and LGBT rights.

1917 - Harry Cameron (Toronto Maple Leafs) became the first defenseman to score four goals in a game.

1919 - An agreement is reached to send Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees.

1927 - The East-West Shrine football game featured numbers on both the front and back of players’ jerseys.

1943 - The Chicago Bears defeat the Washington Redskins 41-21 to win the NFL Championship Game.

1954 - The Cleveland Browns defeat the Detroit Lions 56-10 to win the NFL Championship Game.
