1772 - Construction of the first schoolhouse west of the Allegheny Mountains was started in Schoenbrunn, Ohio by Moravian missionaries.

1807 - Congress passed the Embargo Act.

1864 - During the Civil War, Union Gen. William T. Sherman sent a message to President Abraham Lincoln saying, "I beg to present to you as a Christmas gift the city of Savannah."

1894 - French army officer Capt. Alfred Dreyfus was convicted of treason in a court-martial that triggered worldwide charges of anti-Semitism. (He was eventually vindicated.)

1937 - The first center tube of the Lincoln Tunnel connecting New York City and New Jersey beneath the Hudson River was opened to traffic. (The second tube opened in 1945, the third in 1957.)

1941 - British Prime Minister Winston Churchill arrived in Washington, D.C. for a wartime conference with President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

1944 - During the Battle of the Bulge, Germany demanded the surrender of American troops at Bastogne, Belgium; Brigadier Gen. Anthony C. McAuliffe rejected the ultimatum and reportedly replied: "Nuts!"

1984 - New York City resident Bernhard Goetz shot four Black youths on a Manhattan subway, claiming they were about to rob him.

1989 - Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, the last of Eastern Europe's hardline Communist rulers, was overthrown.

1990 - Lech Walsea took the oath of office as Poland's first popularly elected president.

1992 - A Libyan Boeing 727 jetliner crashed after a midair collision with a MiG fighter, killing all 157 aboard the jetliner, and both crew members of the fighter jet.

2001 - Richard C. Reid, a passenger on an American Airlines flight from Paris to Miami, tried to ignite explosives in his shoes, but was subdued by flight attendants and fellow passengers. (Reid is serving a life sentence in federal prison.)

2001 - Hamid Karzai was sworn in as president of Afghanistan.

2003 - A federal judge ruled the Pentagon couldn’t enforce mandatory anthrax vaccinations for military personnel.

2005 - Astronomers announced the discovery of two more rings encircling the planet Uranus.

2008 - Five Muslim immigrants accused of scheming to massacre U.S. soldiers at Fort Dix were convicted of conspiracy in Camden, New Jersey. (Four were later sentenced to life in prison; one received a 33-year sentence.)

2010 - President Barack Obama officially repealed the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" military policy.

2016 - The Syrian government took full control of the city of Aleppo for the first time in four years after the last opposition fighters and civilians were bused out of war-ravaged eastern districts, ending a brutal chapter in Syria’s civil war.

2020 - President Donald Trump unexpectedly released two videos, one falsely declaring that he had won the election in a “landslide,” and the other urging lawmakers to increase direct payments for most individuals to $2,000 in a COVID relief package, a move opposed by most Republicans.

2020 - California Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed Secretary of State Alex Padilla to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Vice President-elect Kamala Harris; Padilla became California’s first Latino senator.

1894 - The United States Golf Association (USGA) was formed in New York City.

1946 - The Cleveland Browns defeat the New York Yankees 14-9 in the AAFC championship game.

1969 - Pete Maravich sets an NCAA record by hitting 30 of 31 free throws in a single game.

1974 - Phil Esposito (Boston Bruins) scored his 500th goal as a Bruin and the sixth player in NHL history to accomplish the feat.

1993 - The Dallas Mavericks lost their 20th consecutive game.

1996 - Kordell Stewart (Pittsburgh Steelers) ran 80 yards for a touchdown against Carolina. It was the longest scoring run by a quarterback in NFL history.

1996 - Vinny Testaverde (Baltimore Ravens) became the eighth quarterback in NFL history to pass for 4,000 yards and throw at least 30 touchdown passes in a single season.

1996 - Karl Malone (Utah Jazz) became the 11th player to get 20,000 career points and 10,000 career rebounds.

1996 - Brett Hull became the 24th player in NHL history to score 500 goals. Brett and his father Bobby became the first father-son combination to score 500 goals apiece.

1998 - The American Basketball League (ABL) announced that it was suspending operations and filing Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

2019 - New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas sets an NFL record for most catches in a season with 144, breaking Marvin Harrison's record of 143 set in 2002.
