1772 - Construction of the first schoolhouse west of the Allegheny Mountains was started in Schoenbrunn, Ohio by Moravian missionaries.

1807 - Congress passed the Embargo Act.

1864 - During the Civil War, Union Gen. William T. Sherman sent a message to President Abraham Lincoln saying, "I beg to present to you as a Christmas gift the city of Savannah."

1894 - French army officer Capt. Alfred Dreyfus was convicted of treason in a court-martial that triggered worldwide charges of anti-Semitism. (He was eventually acquitted.)

1941 - British Prime Minister Winston Churchill arrived in Washington, D.C., for a wartime conference with President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

1944 - During the Battle of the Bulge, Germany demanded the surrender of American troops at Bastogne, Belgium; Brigadier Gen. Anthony C. McAuliffe reportedly replied: "Nuts!"

1984 - New York City resident Bernhard Goetz shot four black youths on a Manhattan subway, claiming they were about to rob him.

1989 - Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, the last of Europe's hard-line communist rulers, was overthrown.

1990 - Lech Walesa took the oath of office as Poland's first popularly elected president.

1991 - The body of Marine Lt. Col. William R. Higgins, an American hostage slain by his terrorist captors, was recovered after it had been dumped along a highway in Lebanon.

1992 - A Libyan Boeing 727 jetliner crashed after a midair collision with a MiG fighter, killing all 157 aboard the jetliner, and both crew members of the fighter jet.

2000 - Pop singer Madonna married film director Guy Ritchie in Scotland. (The couple divorced in 2008.)

2001 - Richard C. Reid, a passenger on an American Airlines flight from Paris to Miami, tried to ignite explosives in his shoes, but was subdued by flight attendants and fellow passengers.

2001 - Hamid Karzai was sworn in as president of Afghanistan.

2003 - A federal judge ruled the Pentagon couldn’t enforce mandatory anthrax vaccinations for military personnel.

2005 - Astronomers announced the discovery of two more rings encircling the planet Uranus.

2008 - Five Muslim immigrants accused of scheming to massacre U.S. soldiers at Fort Dix were convicted of conspiracy in Camden, N.J. (Four were later sentenced to life in prison; one received a 33-year sentence.)

2010 - President Barack Obama officially repealed the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" military policy, allowing gays to openly serve in the military for the first time.

2015 - Migration experts said more than a million people who had been driven out of their countries by war, poverty and persecution entered Europe in 2015.

1946 - The Cleveland Browns defeat the New York Yankees 14-9 in the AAFC championship game.

1969 - Pete Maravich of LSU sets an NCAA record by hitting 30 of 31 free throws in a game against Oregon State.

1974 - Phil Esposito (Boston Bruins) scored his 500th goal as a Bruin.

1983 - The Indiana Pacers snap a 28-game road losing streak with a 133-132 win over the Denver Nuggets.

1993 - The Dallas Mavericks lost their 20th consecutive game in a 20-game streak.

1996 - Kordell Stewart of the Pittsburgh Steelers ran for an 80-yard touchdown against the Carolina Panthers, marking the longest scoring run by a quarterback in NFL history.

1996 - Vinny Testaverde of the Baltimore Ravens became the eighth quarterback in NFL history to pass for 4,000 yards and at least 30 touchdowns in a single season.

1996 - Karl Malone of the Utah Jazz became the 11th player in NBA history to record 20,000 career points and 10,000 career rebounds.

1996 - Brett Hull became the 24th player in NHL history to score 500 goals. Brett and his father Bobby became the first father-son combination to score 500 goals apiece.

1997 - Scott Bowman becomes the first coach in NHL history to record 200 wins with three different teams (Detroit, Montreal and Buffalo).

1998 - The American Basketball League (ABL) announced that it was suspending operations and filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

2019 - New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas sets an NFL record for most catches in a season with his 144th, breaking the old record of 143 set by Marvin Harrison in 2002.
