1520 - Martin Luther publicly burned the papal edict demanding that he recant or face excommunication.

1817 - Mississippi became the 20th state.

1861 - The Confederacy admitted Kentucky as it recognized a pro-Southern shadow state government that was acting without the authority of the pro-Union government in Frankfort.

1869 - The territory of Wyoming authorized women to vote and hold public office.

1898 - A treaty was signed in Paris officially ending the Spanish-American War.

1901 - The first Nobel Prizes were awarded in Stockholm, Sweden in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace.

1948 - The United Nations General Assembly adopts its Universal Declaration on Human Rights.

1950 - Dr. Ralph Bunche became the first African American to receive a Nobel Peace Prize.

1964 - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. received the Nobel Peace Prize.

1980 - Rep. John W. Jenrette, (D-South Carolina), resigned to avoid being expelled from the House following his conviction on charges related to the FBI's Abscam investigation.

1984 - South African Bishop Desmond Tutu received the Nobel Peace Prize.

1994 - Yasser Arafat, Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin received the Nobel Peace Prize.

1996 - South African President Nelson Mandela signed the country’s new constitution into law during a ceremony in Sharpeville.

1998 - Six astronauts opened the doors to the new international space station.

1998 - The Palestinian leadership scrapped constitutional clauses rejecting Israel's right to exist.

1999 - Los Alamos scientist Wen Ho Lee was arrested and charged with stealing classified information.

2002 - Former President Jimmy Carter accepted the Nobel Peace Prize for his diplomacy in the Middle East in the 1970s.

2004 - A U.S. passenger jet landed in Vietnam, the first one to do so since the Vietnam War ended nearly three decades earlier.

2007 - Former Vice President Al Gore accepted the Nobel Peace Prize with a call for humanity to rise up against a looming climate crisis.

2009 - President Barack Obama accepted the Nobel Peace Prize with a humble acknowledgment of his scant accomplishments and a robust defense of the U.S. at war.

2013 - South Africa held a memorial service for Nelson Mandela, during which U.S. President Barack Obama energized tens of thousands of spectators and nearly 100 visiting heads of state with a plea for the world to emulate “the last great liberator of the 20th century.” (The ceremony was marred by the presence of a sign-language interpreter who deaf advocates said was an impostor waving his arms around meaninglessly.)

2019 - House Democrats announced two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, declaring that he "betrayed the nation" with his actions toward Ukraine and an obstruction of Congress' investigation; Trump responded with a tweet of "WITCH HUNT!"

2016 - Donald Trump’s presidential transition team challenged the veracity of U.S. intelligence assessments that Russia had tried to tip the November election in his favor.

2020 - A U.S. government advisory panel endorsed widespread use of Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine, putting the country one step away from launching an epic vaccination campaign. (The Food and Drug administration would authorize the vaccine the following day.)

1919 - The National League voted to ban spitballs by all new pitchers. The Rules Committee officially worked out the ban the following February.

1922 - Pete Henry makes the longest-known drop-kicked field goal in NFL history at 45 yards.

1939 - The Green Bay Packers defeat the New York Giants 27-0 in the NFL Championship Game.

1972 - The American League voted to adopt the designated-hitter rule in a three-year experiment. In December of 1975 the American League voted to permanently adopt the designated-hitter rule.

1972 - The longest non-scoring pass in NFL history was made when Jim Hart (St. Louis Cardinals) threw a pass from his own one yard-line to Bobby Moore (Ahmad Rashad). Moore was tackled on the Rams' one-yard line. The pass was officially 98 yards.

1992 - The NHL awarded franchises to Miami and Anaheim for the 1994-95 season.

1994 - Art Monk of the New York Jets set an NFL record of 178 consecutive games with a reception.

1994 - Colorado running back Rashaan Salaam wins the Heisman Trophy.

2001 - Nebraska quarterback Eric Crouch wins the Heisman Trophy.

2005 - USC running back Reggie Bush wins the Heisman Trophy.

2007 - NFL star Michael Vick was sentenced to 23 months in prison for bankrolling a dogfighting operation and killing dogs that underperformed.

2011 - Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III won the Heisman Trophy.

2012 - Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel wins the Heisman Trophy.

2016 - Army ended a 14-year losing streak to rival Navy with a 21-17 victory.

2016 - Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson won the Heisman Trophy, and at age 19, is the award's youngest-ever winner.

2020 - The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee heeded calls from American athletes by announcing that it wouldn’t penalize them for raising their fists or kneeling on the medals stand at the Tokyo Games and beyond.
