1861 - Union Gen. John C. Fremont instituted martial law in Missouri and declared slaves there to be free. (However, Fremont’s emancipation order was countermanded by President Abraham Lincoln.)

1862 - The Second Battle of Bull Run took place during the Civil War.

1941 - The two-year siege of Leningrad during World War II began.

1945 - Gen. Douglas MacArthur arrived in Japan and set up Allied occupation headquarters.

1963 - A hotline telephone link between the Kremlin and the White House went into operation to reduce the chances of an accidental war.

1967 - Cleopatra VII, Queen of Egypt, committed suicide.

1967 - The Senate confirmed the appointment of Thurgood Marshall as the first African-American justice on the Supreme Court.

1983 - Guion S. Bluford Jr. became the first African-American astronaut to travel in space when he blasted off aboard the space shuttle Challenger.

1987 - A redesigned space shuttle booster, created in the wake of the Challenger disaster, roared into life in its first full-scale test-firing near Brigham City, Utah.

1989 - A federal jury in New York found "hotel queen" Leona Helmsley guilty of income tax evasion but acquitted her of extortion.

1990 - President George H.W. Bush told a news conference that a "new world order" could emerge from the Persian Gulf crisis.

1993 - "The Late Show with David Letterman" premiered on CBS.

1997 - Americans received word of the car crash in Paris that claimed the lives of Princess Diana, her boyfriend Dodi Fayed and their driver, Henri Paul. (Because of the time difference, it was August 31 where the crash occurred.)

1999 - East Timor residents voted to secede from Indonesia.

2005 - A day after Hurricane Katrina hit, floods were covering more than 80 percent of New Orleans, looting continued to spread and rescuers in helicopters and boats picked up hundreds of stranded people.

2007 - In a serious breach of nuclear security, a B-52 bomber armed with six nuclear warheads flew cross-country unnoticed; the Air Force later punished 70 people.

2011 - National Guard helicopters rushed food and water to a dozen cut-off Vermont towns after the rainy remnants of Hurricane Irene washed out roads and bridges in a deluge that had taken many people in the landlocked New England state by surprise.

2012 - Mitt Romney launched his fall campaign for the White House with a rousing, personal speech to the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida, proclaiming that America needs "jobs, lots of jobs."

2015 - The White House announced that President Barack Obama would change the name of North America's tallest mountain peak from Mount McKinley to Denali, bestowing the traditional Alaska Native name on the eve of a historic presidential visit to Alaska.

2020 - President Donald Trump praised supporters who clashed with Black Lives Matter protesters in Portland, Oregon, calling them “great patriots”; Trump and Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler blamed each other for the violence.

1905 - Ty Cobb made his major league debut with the Detroit Tigers.

1967 - Casey Stengel announces his retirement after a 55-year career in baseball.

1987 - Canada's Ben Johnson set the world record in the 100 meter race at 9.83 seconds. Johnson later lost the record due to steroid use.

1987 - Kirby Puckett of the Minnesota Twins goes 6-for-6 at the plate in a win over the Milwaukee Brewers.

1991 - At the World Track & Field Championships, American Mike Powell sets a new world record in the long jump at 29' 4.5".

1997 - The Houston Comets defeat the New York Liberty to win the inaugural WNBA championship.

1997 - #6 Nebraska opens the season with a 59-14 win over Akron.

2001 - Ashely Martin became the first woman to play in a Division I football game. She kicked three extra points in the game.

2002 - The major league baseball players union and the team owners came to an agreement that avoided a player's strike set to begin on this day.

2003 - Nebraska opens the season with a 17-7 win over #24 Oklahoma State.

2006 - Pitcher Greg Maddux wins his 330th career game.

2008 - Bo Pelini debuts as Nebraska's head coach with a 47-24 win over Western Michigan.

2012 - Andy Roddick announces his retirement following the U.S. Open.

2014 - #22 Nebraska opens the season with a 55-7 win over Florida Atlantic.
