1862 - The Second Battle of Bull Run took place during the Civil War.

1916 - On his fourth attempt, explorer Ernest Shackelton successfully returned to Elephant Island in Antarctica to rescue 22 of his stranded crew members, who had survived on the barren island for four and a half months after the sinking of their ship, the Endurance.

1941 - The two-year siege of Leningrad during World War II began.

1945 - Gen. Douglas MacArthur arrived in Japan to setup Allied occupation headquarters.

1963 - A dedicated hot-line telephone link went into operation between the Kremlin and the White House to reduce the chances of an accidental war.

1967 - Cleopatra VII, Queen of Egypt, committed suicide.

1967 - The U.S. Senate confirmed the appointment of Thurgood Marshall as the first Black justice on the United States Supreme Court.

1999 - Residents of East Timor voted for independence from Indonesia.

2005 - A day after Hurricane Katrina hit, floods covered more than 80 percent of New Orleans, looting continued to spread and rescuers in helicopters and boats picked up hundreds of stranded people.

2021 - The United States completed its withdrawal from Afghanistan, ending America's longest war with the Taliban back in power, as Air Force transport planes carried a remaining contingent of troops from Kabul Airport. After watching the last U.S. planes disappear into the sky over Afghanistan, Taliban fighters fired their guns into the air, celebrating victory over a 20-year insurgency.

2022 - Mikhail Gorbachev, the final leader of the former Soviet Union and who produced extraordinary reforms that led to the end of the Cold War, died at age 91.

1965 - Casey Stengel announces retirement after 55 years in Major League Baseball.

1987 - Canada's Ben Johnson set the world record in the 100 meter race at 9.83. Johnson later lost the record due to steroid use.

1987 - Kirby Puckett of the Minnesota Twins goes 6-for-6 at the plate in a game against the Milwaukee Brewers.

1987 - With knuckleballer Charlie Hough on the mound, Texas Rangers catcher Geno Petralli ties the major league record by allowing 6 passed balls.

1997 - The Houston Comets defeat the New York Liberty to win the inaugural WNBA championship.

2001 - Ashley Martin became the first woman to play in a Division I football game. She kicked three extra points in the game.
