1492 - Christopher Columbus set sail from Palos, Spain on a voyage that took him to the present-day Americas.

1914 - Germany declared war on France during World War I.

1916 - Irish-born British diplomat Roger Casement, a strong advocate of independence for Ireland, was hanged for treason.

1923 - Vice President Calvin Coolidge was sworn in as the 30th president of the United States, following the death of President Warren G. Harding.

1958 - The nuclear-powered submarine Nautilus became the first vessel to cross the North Pole underwater.

1966 - Comedian Lenny Bruce, whose raunchy brand of satire and dark humor landed him in trouble with the law, was found dead in his Los Angeles home at age 40.

1972 - The U.S. Senate ratified the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty between the United States and the Soviet Union.

1981 - U.S. air traffic controllers went on strike, despite a warning from President Ronald Reagan they would be fired, which they were.

1987 - The Iran-Contra hearings ended.

1993 - The Senate voted 96-to-3 to confirm Ruth Bader Ginsburg to the United States Supreme Court.

1994 - Arkansas carried out the nation's first triple execution in 32 years.

1994 - Stephen G. Breyer was sworn in to the United States Supreme Court.

2005 - Fourteen Marines from a Reserve unit in Ohio were killed in a roadside bombing in Iraq.

2013 - President Barack Obama's trade representative, Michael Froman, vetoed a yet-to-be-enacted ban on imports of Chinese-made Apple iPads and iPhones, overruling the U.S. International Trade Commission and dealing a setback to rival South Korean electronics company Samsung.

2014 - Israel withdrew most of its ground troops from the Gaza Strip in an apparent winding down of a nearly monthlong operation against Hamas that had left more than 1,800 Palestinians and more than 60 Israelis dead.

2018 - Las Vegas police said they were closing their investigation into the Oct. 1 shooting that left 58 people dead at a country music festival without a definitive answer for why Stephen Paddock unleashed gunfire from a hotel suite onto the concert crowd.

2019 - A gunman opened fire at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas, leaving 22 people dead; prosecutors said Patrick Crusius targeted Mexicans in hopes of scaring Latinos into leaving the U.S., and that he had outlined the plot in a screed published online shortly before the attack. (A man who was wounded in the shooting died in April 2020 after months in the hospital, raising the death toll to 23.)

2022 - Warner Bros. axed the "Batgirl" film it had planned for HBO Max, opting to shelve the $90 million film as the reorganized studio revamped its approach to streaming and DC Comics films. The decision was one without any obvious parallel in recent Hollywood history.

1852 - America's first intercollegiate sporting event takes place as the Harvard heavyweight rowing crew beats Yale by 2 lengths over 2 miles on Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire.

1909 - MLB umpire Tim Hurst instigates a riot by spitting in the face of Philadelphia Athletics second baseman Eddie Collins who had questioned a call; two weeks later Hurst was banned for life.

1921 - MLB commissioner Kenesaw Landis handed out life time bans to the eight members of the Chicago White Sox who were accused in the "Black Sox" scandal despite their acquittal by a Chicago jury.

1936 - Jesse Owens of the United States won the first of his four gold medals at the Berlin Olympics as he took the 100-meter sprint.

1948 - Negro League veteran pitcher Satchel Paige, at age 42, debuts with the Cleveland Indians and goes seven innings in a 5-3 win over Washington.

1949 - The National Basketball Association was formed through a merger of the Basketball Association of America and the National Basketball League.

1960 - For the only time in MLB history, two teams trade managers as the Detroit Tigers trade Jimmy Dykes to the Cleveland Indians for Joe Gordon.

1970 - The second ever NFL work stoppage ends with NFL and Players' Association agreeing to a 4-year, $19.1 million deal.

1979 - Sam Snead, at age 67 years, 2 months and 7 days, sets the record for oldest player to make the cut in a major at the PGA Championship at Oakland Hills CC.

1980 - Al Kaline, Duke Snider, Chuck Klein and Tom Yawkey are inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

1984 - Mary Lou Retton scores 10 for final vault to win the individual all-round competition in Los Angeles and become first American woman to win an Olympic gymnastics medal.

1986 - Willie McCovey, Bobby Doerr and Ernie Lombardi are inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

1987 - Minnesota Twins pitcher Joe Niekro is caught with a file on the mound in an 11-3 win over the California Angels; Niekro is ejected and suspended for 10 games.

1989 - The Cincinnati Reds set MLB record for most hits in 1st inning of a game with 16 for 14 runs in an 18-1 rout of Houston Astros.

2004 - Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals becomes the first player in MLB history to hit at least 30 home runs in each of his first four seasons.

2006 - Barry Bonds' 715th home run ball, which moved him past Babe Ruth into second place on the all-time MLB list, sold at auction for $220,100.

2016 - International Olympic Committee approves baseball/softball, karate, sport climbing, surfing and skateboarding to be included in the sports program for 2020 Games only; total number of sports, 33
