1057 - Macbeth, King of Scotland, was killed in battle by Malcolm, the eldest son of King Duncan, whom Macbeth had slain.

1769 - Napoleon Bonaparte was born on the island of Corsica.

1911 - Proctor & Gamble Co. introduced Crisco vegetable shortening.

1914 - The Panama Canal officially opened as the SS Ancon crossed the just-completed waterway between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

1935 - Humorist Will Rogers and aviator Wiley Post were killed when their airplane crashed near Point Barrow, Alaska.

1939 - The Wizard of Oz had its world premiere in Hollywood.

1944 - Allied forces landed in southern France during World War II.

1945 - The Allies proclaimed "V-J Day", one day after Japan agreed to surrender unconditionally. In a pre-recorded radio address, Japan's Emperor Hirohito announced to his country that Japan had accepted terms of surrender to end World War II.

1947 - The Indian Independence Bill created the two independent states of India and Pakistan.

1948 - South Korea became the Republic of Korea.

1960 - The Republic of the Congo became independent of French rule.

1969 - The Woodstock Music and Art Fair opened at Max Yasgur's dairy farm near Bethel, New York.

1971 - President Richard M. Nixon announced a 90-day freeze on wages, prices and rents.

1998 - A car bomb in Omagh, Northern Ireland, killed 29 people and injured 370; a splinter group calling itself the Real IRA claimed responsibility.

2000 - One hundred people from North Korea arrived in South Korea for temporary reunions with relatives they had not seen for half a century; 100 South Koreans visited the North.

2001 - Astronomers announced the discovery of the first solar system outside of our own.

2006 - Israel began withdrawing its forces from southern Lebanon.

2015 - Japanese Emperor Akihito expressed rare “deep remorse” over his country’s wartime actions in an address marking the 70th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II, a day after the prime minister fell short of apologizing to victims of Japanese aggression.

2016 - Republican Donald Trump called for “extreme” ideological vetting of immigrants seeking admission to the United States, vowing during a speech in Youngstown, Ohio, to significantly overhaul the country’s screening process and block those who sympathized with extremist groups or didn’t embrace American values. President Barack Obama, in Chilmark, Massachusetts, urged Democrats to campaign aggressively for the next 80 days to elect Hillary Clinton, saying that “if we do not do our jobs, then it’s still possible for her to lose.”

2017 - President Donald Trump, who’d faced harsh criticism for initially blaming the deadly weekend violence in Charlottesville, Virginia on “many sides,” told reporters that there were “very fine people on both sides” of the confrontation and that groups protesting against the white supremacists were “also very violent.” (In between those statements, at the urging of aides, Trump had offered a more direct condemnation of white supremacists.)

2020 - President Donald Trump’s younger brother, businessman Robert Trump, died after being hospitalized in New York; he was 71.

1970 - Mrs. Pat Palinkas became the first woman to play in a pro football game when she held the ball for the Orlando Panthers.

1984 - Pete Rose returned to become player and manager of the Cincinnati Reds. He had been away from his hometown for six years. Rose had been in Philadelphia and Montreal.

1990 - Mark McGwire hit a grand slam in the 10th inning to become the first major league player to hit 30 or more homers in his first four seasons.

1993 - Nolan Ryan got his 324th and final victory. The Texas Rangers beat the Indians 4-1.

1997 - The Los Angeles Dodgers retired Tommy Lasorda's #2.

1999 - Tiger Woods wins the PGA Championship, his second major victory.

2005 - Phil Mickelson wins the PGA Championship.

2008 - American gymnasts Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson finish first and second in the all-around competition at the Olympic Games in Beijing.

2011 - Jim Thome of the Minnesota Twins became the eighth player in MLB history to hit 600 career home runs.

2012 - Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners becomes the 23rd pitcher in MLB history to throw a perfect game in a 1-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.
 
2021 - after 20 years of War Kabul is surrounded by the Taliban as the US emergency air lifts out who they can.
