1521 - After a three-month siege, the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan fell to the Spanish conquistadors, marking the end of one empire and the rise of another.

1792 - French revolutionaries arrested and imprisoned King Louis XVI; he would be executed by guillotine the following January.

1868 - A series of earthquakes in Peru and Ecuador killed more than 25,000 people.

1889 - William Gray of Hartford, Connecticut, received a patent for the first coin-operated telephone.

1906 - An all-Black Army unit was accused of a shooting rampage that left one civilian dead at Fort Brown in Brownsville, Texas. (In 1972 they were all exonerated.)

1918 - Opha May Johnson became the first woman to join the U.S. Marine Corps.

1942 - Disney's "Bambi" opened at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

1952 - Big Mama Thornton first recorded the song “Hound Dog,” four years before Elvis Presley’s famous version was released.

1961 - On what would become known as Barbed Wire Sunday, East Germany sealed the border between Berlin’s eastern and western sectors before building a wall that would divide the city for the next 28 years.

1969 - New York City held a ticket-tape parade for Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin and Michael Collins.

2011 - Seven people were killed when a stage collapsed at the Indiana State Fair during a powerful storm just before a concert was set to begin.

1963 - Warren Spahn sets a new MLB record for career strikeouts by a left-handed pitcher with 2,382.

1979 - Lou Brock of the St. Louis Cardinals becomes the 14th player in MLB history to reach 3,000 career hits.

1986 - United States Football League standout Herschel Walker signed to play with the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League.

1995 - Baseball Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle died after a battle with liver cancer at age 63.

2006 - Travis Hafner of the Cleveland Indians ties Don Mattingly's MLB record with his sixth grand slam of the season.

2008 - American swimmer Michael Phelps won his 11th career gold medal, becoming the first athlete in Olympic history to do so.

2016 - American swimmer Michael Phelps ends his career at the Rio Olympics as part of the winning 4x100 medley relay team, earning his 23rd career gold medal.
