1862 - Gen. Ulysses S. Grant defeated the Confederates at the Battle of Shiloh during the Civil War.

1913 - More than 5,000 suffragists marched on the Capitol in Washington, D.C. seeking the right to vote for women.

1922 - The Teapot Dome scandal had its beginnings as Interior Secretary Albert B. Fall signed a secret deal to lease U.S. Navy petroleum reserves in Wyoming and California to his friends, oilmen Harry F. Sinclair and Edward L. Doheny, in exchange for cash gifts.

1927 - U.S. Commerce Secretary Herbert Hoover's speech in Washington, D.C. was seen and heard in New York in the first long-distance television transmission.

1943 - LSD was first produced at Sandoz Laboratorie in Basil, Switzerland by Albert Hoffman.

1945 - During World War II, American planes intercepted and effectively destroyed a Japanese fleet, which included the battleship Yamato, that was headed to Okinawa on a suicide mission.

1948 - The World Health Organization was founded.

1954 - President Dwight D. Eisenhower held a news conference in which he spoke of the importance of containing the spread of communism in Indochina, saying, “You have a row of dominoes set up, you knock over the first one, and what will happen to the last one is the certainty that it will go over very quickly.” (This became known as the “domino theory,” although Eisenhower did not use that term.)

1957 - Shortly after midnight, the last of New York’s electric trolleys completed its final run from Queens to Manhattan.

1959 - A referendum in Oklahoma repealed the state’s ban on alcoholic beverages.

1962 - Nearly 1,200 Cuban exiles tried by Cuba for their roles in the failed Bay of Pigs invasion were convicted of treason.

1966 - The U.S. Navy recovered a hydrogen bomb that the U.S. Air Force had lost in the Mediterranean Sea off Spain following a B-52 crash.

1984 - The U.S. Census Bureau reported Los Angeles had overtaken Chicago as the nation's second-largest city.

1994 - Hutu extremists in Rwanda began massacring ethnic Tutsis and politically moderate Hutus. (In 100 days of killing, an estimated 800,000 people were murdered.)

2009 - Vermont became the fourth state to legalize same-sex marriage, just days after Cockeye became the third.

2018 - Former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was taken into police custody after a showdown with his own supporters, who tried to keep him from surrendering to face prison time for a corruption conviction.

2020 - Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly resigned after lambasting the officer he’d fired as the captain of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, which had been stricken by a coronavirus outbreak; James McPherson was appointed as acting Navy secretary.

2022 - The Senate confirmed Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court, shattering a historic barrier by securing her place as the first Black female justice and giving President Joe Biden a bipartisan endorsement for his effort to diversify the high court.

1955 - Fort Wayne beat Syracuse 74-71. It was the lowest scoring NBA Playoff game since the introduction of the 24-second shot clock.

1956 - The Philadelphia Warriors defeated the Fort Wayne Pistons in five games to win the NBA championship.

1959 - Bob Cousy (Boston Celtics) achieved 19 assists, to tie an NBA Playoff record, in a game against Minneapolis.

1963 - At the age of 23, Jack Nicklaus became the youngest golfer to win the Green Jacket at the Masters Tournament.

1986 - WrestleMania 2 is held concurrently at three different sites. At Nassau Coliseum, Mr. T defeated "Rowdy" Roddy Piper in a boxing match; in Chicago, the main event saw the British Bulldogs defeat The Dream Team for the WWF Tag Team championships, along with Andre the Giant winning a "WWF vs. NFL" battle royal; and in Los Angeles, Hulk Hogan defeated King Kong Bundy for the WWF championship.

2001 - The New Jersey Devils ended a streak of 10 consecutive road wins to tie the NHL record.

2003 - Syracuse defeats Kansas 81-78 to win the NCAA Tournament.

2008 - Kansas defeats Memphis 75-68 to win the NCAA Tournament.

2009 - Connecticut defeats Louisville 76-54 to win the NCAA Women's Tournament for the sixth time.

2013 - WrestleMania 29 is held in East Rutherford, New Jersey; the main event saw John Cena defeat The Rock for the WWE championship.

2014 - Connecticut defeats Kentucky 60-54 to win the NCAA Tournament; it marks the second time a school won both the men's and women's national titles in the same season.

2015 - Connecticut defeats Notre Dame 63-53 to win the NCAA Women's Tournament.

2019 - Baylor defeats Notre Dame 82-81 to win the NCAA Women's Tournament.

2019 - WrestleMania 35 is held at East Rutherford, New Jersey; the main event featured a women's match for the first time as Becky Lynch defeated Charlotte Flair and Ronda Rousey to unify the WWE's women's championships.

2019 - The Houston Rockets convert an NBA record 27 three-point field goals in a 149-113 win over the Phoenix Suns.

2022 - Five-time champion Tiger Woods returned to golf at the Masters, shooting a 1-under 71 in his first competitive round since a devastating car wreck 14 months earlier.

2022 - The Cleveland Guardians play their first game under their new moniker, losing 3-1 to the Kansas City Royals.
