1789 - George Washington took the oath of office to become the first president of the United States.

1803 - France sold Louisiana and adjoining lands to the United States for approximately $15 million as part of the Louisiana Purchase.

1812 - Louisiana became the 18th state.

1900 - Engineer John Luther “Casey” Jones of the Illinois Central Railroad died in a train wreck near Vaughan, Mississippi, after staying at the controls in a successful effort to save the passengers.

1939 - Commercial television made its debut in the United States at the New York's World Fair with a signal transmitted from the Empire State Building.

1945 - Adolf Hitler and his newly married mistress Evan Braun committed suicide as Soviet troops approached his Berlin bunker.

1947 - President Harry S. Truman signed a resolution officially confirming the name of Hoover Dam, which had also come to be known as Boulder Dam.

1948 - The Organization of American States held its first meeting in Bogota, Colombia.

1958 - Britain's Life Peerages Act of 1958 allowed women to become members of the House of Lords.

1970 - President Richard Nixon announced he was sending American troops into Cambodia, an action that sparked widespread protest.

1973 - President Richard Nixon announced the resignations of top aides H.R. Haldeman and John Ehrlichman, Attorney General Richard G. Kleindienst and White House counsel John Dean, who was actually fired.

1975 - The Vietnam War came to an end with South Vietnam's surrender to North Vietnam.

1983 - Blues singer and guitarist Muddy Waters died in Westmont, Illinois, at age 68.

2003 - Libya accepted responsibility for the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.

2004 - Arabs expressed outrage at graphic photographs of naked Iraqi prisoners being humiliated by U.S. military police; President George W. Bush condemned the mistreatment of prisoners, saying “that’s not the way we do things in America.”

2013 - The FDA lowered to 15 the age at which females could buy the Plan B emergency contraceptive without a prescription, and said it no longer had to be kept behind pharmacy counters.

2022 - Naomi Judd, the Kentucky-born singer of the Grammy-winning duo The Judds and mother of Wynonna and Ashley Judd, died at age 76.

1922 - Charlie Robertson (Chicago White Sox) threw a perfect game against the Detroit Tigers.

1939 - Lou Gehrig played in his final game with the New York Yankees, wrapping up a record 2,130 consecutive appearances.

1961 - Willie Mays (San Francisco) hit four home runs against the Milwaukee Braves.

1971 - The Milwaukee Bucks swept the Baltimore Bullets to win the NBA championship.

1985 - The Buffalo Bills select Virginia Tech defensive end Bruce Smith with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1993 - Top-ranked women’s tennis player Monica Seles was stabbed in the back during a match in Hamburg, Germany, by a man who described himself as a fan of second-ranked German player Steffi Graf. (The man, convicted of causing grievous bodily harm, was given a suspended sentence.)

1996 - The New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles played the longest nine-inning game in major league baseball history. The game took four hours and 21 minutes.

1997 - Riddick Bowe announced his retirement from boxing to pursue a career with the HBO cable network. His career record was 40-1 with 32 knockouts.

2002 - Alex Rodriguez became the second youngest major league player to reach 250 home runs. He was 26 years and 277 days old.

2012 - Manchester City defeated Manchester United 1-0 in what is claimed to be the biggest match in English Premier League history.

2015 - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston with the first pick in the NFL Draft.
