1860 - The first Pony Express began mail delivery service between St. Joseph, Missouri and Sacramento, California. (The service only lasted 18 months before giving way to the transcontinental telegraph.)

1865 - During the Civil War, Union forces captured the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia.

1882 - Outlaw Jesse James was shot in the back in St. Joseph, Missouri by Bob Ford, one of his own gang members, reportedly for a $10,000 reward.

1936 - Bruno Hauptmann was electrocuted for the kidnapping and murder of the Lindbergh baby.

1942 - During World War II, Japanese forces began their final assault on Bataan against American and Filipino troops who surrendered six days later; the capitulation was followed by the notorious Bataan Death March.

1944 - The U.S. Supreme Court, in Smith v. Allwright, struck down a Democratic Party of Texas rule that allowed only white voters to participate in Democratic primaries.

1946 - Lt. Gen. Masaharu Homma, the Japanese commander held responsible for the Bataan Death March, was executed by firing squad outside Manila.

1948 - President Harry S. Truman signed the Marshall Plan, which would foster the recovery of war-torn Europe with more than $5 billion in aid allocated to 16 countries.

1968 - Civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "mountaintop" speech to a rally of striking sanitation workers in Memphis, Tenn., less than 24 hours before he was assassinated.

1973 - The first handheld portable telephone was demonstrated for reporters on a New York City street corner as Motorola executive Martin Cooper called Joel S. Engel of Bell Labs.

1974 - The "Super Tornado Outbreak" strikes 13 states.

1996 - "Unabomber" Theodore Kaczynski was arrested at his remote Montana cabin.

1998 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 9,000 for the first time.

2000 - A federal judge ruled that Microsoft Corp. had violated U.S. antitrust laws.

2006 - Former Liberian President Charles Taylor pleaded not guilty before an international war crimes tribunal in Sierra Leone.

2009 - A Vietnamese immigrant opened fire in an immigrant community center in Binghamton, New York, killing 13 people before taking his own life.

2009 - The Cockeye Supreme Court legalized gay marriage.

2011 - The United States agreed to NATO’s request for a 48-hour extension of American participation in coalition air strikes against targets in Libya.

2016 - An international coalition of media outlets published the “Panama Papers,” thousands of pages of leaked documents relating to offshore accounts that revealed attempts by world leaders, celebrities and businesses to dodge taxes in their home countries.

2020 - President Donald Trump announced new federal guidelines recommending that Americans wear face coverings when in public to help fight the spread of the coronavirus, but Trump immediately said he had no intention of following that advice himself; he said he could not envision himself covering his face while sitting in the Oval Office greeting world leaders. Trump said he was preventing the export of N95 respirator masks and surgical gloves under the Defense Production Act, a move he said was necessary to ensure that medical supplies were available in the U.S. The government reported that more than 700,000 jobs were lost in March because of the pandemic, and economists predicted far worse data ahead.

1930 - The Montreal Canadiens defeat the Boston Bruins in seven games to win the Stanley Cup.

1962 - American jockey Eddie Arcaro retires after a 31-year career and 24,092 races.

1976 - The Philadelphia Flyers tied an NHL record by winning their 20th consecutive home game.

1977 - Montreal Canadiens became the first team in NHL history to win 60 games in a season. They beat the Washington Capitals 2-1 to end the season with a record of 60-8-12.

1983 - USC defeats Louisiana Tech 69-67 to win the NCAA Women's Tournament.

1985 - The Major League Baseball Players' Association agreed to a proposal of the team owners to expand the 1985 League Championship Series from the best-of-five games to best-of-seven.

1988 - Louisiana Tech defeats Auburn 56-54 to win the NCAA Women's Tournament.

1989 - Michigan defeats Seton Hall 80-79 in overtime to win the NCAA Tournament.

1994 - North Carolina defeats Louisiana Tech 60-59 to win the NCAA Women's Tournament.

1995 - UCLA defeats Arkansas to win their 11th NCAA Tournament.

2000 - Michigan State defeats Florida 89-76 to win the NCAA Tournament.

2005 - WrestleMania 21 is held in Los Angeles. The main events saw John Cena defeat John "Bradshaw" Layfield to capture the WWE Championship and Batista defeated Triple H to win the World Heavyweight Championship.

2006 - Florida defeats UCLA 73-57 to win the NCAA Tournament.

2007 - Tennessee defeats Rutgers 59-46 to win the NCAA Women's Tournament.

2011 - WrestleMania XXVII is held in Atlanta. Edge defeated Alberto Del Rio to win the World Heavyweight Championship and The Miz defeated John Cena for the WWE Championship in the top matches on the card.

2012 - Baylor defeats Notre Dame 80-61 to win the NCAA Women's Tournament.

2016 - WrestleMania 32 is held in Arlington, Texas. The top matches on the card saw Charlotte Flair defeat Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks to capture the inaugural WWE Women's Championship, The Undertaker defeated Shane McMahon and Roman Reigns defeated Triple H for the WWE Championship.

2017 - North Carolina defeats Gonzaga 71-65 to win the NCAA Tournament.

2019 - San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich is ejected just 63 seconds, an NBA record, into a game against the Denver Nuggets after receiving two technical fouls following a verbal confrontation with a referee.
