1507 - A world map produced by German cartographer Martin Waldseemueller contained the first recorded use of the term "America," in honor of Italian navigator Amerigo Vespucci.

1792 - Highwayman Nicolas Jacques Pelletier became the first person under French law to be executed by guillotine.

1859 - Ground was broken for the Suez Canal.

1862 - During the Civil War, a Union fleet commanded by Flag Officer David G. Farragut captured the city of New Orleans.

1874 - Radio pioneer Guglielmo Marconi was born in Bologna, Italy.

1898 - Congress declared war on Spain; the 10-week Spanish-American War resulted in an American victory.

1901 - New York became the first state to require automobile license plates.

1915 - British, Australian and New Zealand forces landed at Gallipoli in an unsuccessful attempt to take the Ottoman Turkish Empire out of World War I.

1917 - Legendary jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald was born in Newport News, Virginia.

1928 - The first seeing eye dog was presented to Morris S. Frank.

1944 - The United Negro College Fund was founded.

1945 - Delegates from more than 50 countries met in San Francisco to organize the United Nations.

1945 - U.S. and Soviet forces linked up on the Elbe River in central Europe, a meeting that dramatized the collapse of Nazi Germany.

1953 - The Francis Crick and James Watson article describing the double-helix nature of DNA is published in the magazine Nature.

2003 - The Georgia legislature voted to scrap the Confederate flag design from its state flag.

2007 - The Dow Jones industrial average topped 13,000 for the first time, ending the day at 13,089.89.

2011 - President Bashar Assad of Syria sent the military into the southern city of Daraa, where an anti-government uprising had begun the previous month.

2016 - The city of Cleveland reached a $6 million settlement in a lawsuit over the death of Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old Black boy shot by a white police officer while playing with a pellet gun outside a recreation center.

2019 - Former Vice President Joe Biden entered the Democratic presidential race, declaring the fight against Donald Trump to be a "battle for the soul of this nation."

2020 - As the global death toll from the coronavirus surpassed 200,000, countries took cautious steps toward easing lockdowns. The U.K. became the fifth country in the world to report 20,000 virus-related deaths.

1876 - The Chicago Cubs play their first game in the National League, a 4-0 shutout over Louisville.

1945 - Albert B. "Happy" Chandler was unanimously elected baseball commissioner.

1952 - The Minneapolis Lakers defeat the New York Knicks in seven games for the NBA championship.

1956 - Rocky (Brockton Blockbuster) Marciano retired as the undefeated heavyweight champion of the world. He had 43 knockouts and 3 decisions to his credit.

1963 - Bob Cousy of the Boston Celtics announced his retirement.

1965 - The Boston Celtics defeat the Los Angeles Lakers in five games for the NBA championship.

1974 - NFL owners approve moving the goal posts to the back of the end zone and adopted sudden-death overtime rules.

1978 - The "Phillie Phanatic" makes its first appearance at a Philadelphia Phillies game.

1989 - Penguin Mario Lemuix ties NHL playoff record of 4 goals in 1st period.

1993 - The New England Patriots select Washington State quarterback Drew Bledsoe with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1993 - The following Huskers were selected in the 1993 NFL Draft: DT - John Parrella (2nd round, Buffalo Bills); OG - Will Shields (3rd round, Kansas City Chiefs); RB - Derek Brown (4th round, New Orleans Saints); CB - Tyrone Hughes (5th round, New Orleans Saints); LB - Travis Hill (7th round, Cleveland Browns); and RB - Lance Lewis (7th round, Indianapolis Colts).

1995 - Petr Nedved (Pittsburgh Penguins) scored the game-winning goal with only 45 seconds left remaining in the fourth overtime period between the Penguins and the Washington Capitals. The game was the third longest in NHL history.

2009 - The Detroit Lions select Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

2009 - The following Huskers were selected in the 2009 NFL Draft: LB - Cody Glenn (5th round, Washington Redskins); OG - Matt Slauson (6th round, New York Jets); and OT - Lydon Murtha (7th round, Detroit Lions).

2010 - The NHL implemented a new rule that allowed the NHL Hockey Operations Department to review any hit where the head was targeted and/or the principal point of contact for the purpose of Supplementary Discipline.

2013 - The Kansas City Chiefs select Central Michigan offensive tackle Eric Fisher with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

2013 - The following Huskers were selected in the 2013 NFL Draft: RB - Rex Burkhead (6th round, Cincinnati Bengals) and S - Daimion Stafford (7th round, Tennessee Titans).

2016 - A panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan ruled 2-to-1 that New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady had to serve a four-game “Deflategate” suspension imposed by the NFL, overturning a lower judge and siding with the league in a battle with the players union. (Brady ended up serving the suspension.)

2019 - The Arizona Cardinals select Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

2019 - For the first time since 1962, no Huskers were selected in the annual NFL Draft.
