404 B.C.. - The Peloponnesian War ended as Athens surrendered to Sparta.

1507 - A world map produced by German cartographer Martin Waldseemueller contained the first recorded use of the term "America" in honor of Italian navigator Amerigo Vespucci.

1859 - Ground was broken for the Suez Canal.

1862 - During the Civil War, a Union fleet commanded by Flag Officer David G. Farragut captured the city of New Orleans.

1898 - Congress declared war on Spain; the 10-week conflict resulted in an American victory.

1901 - New York became the first state to require license plates on cars.

1915 - During World War I, Allied soldiers invaded the Gallipoli Peninsula in an unsuccessful attempt to take the Ottoman Empire out of the war.

1928 - The first seeing eye dog was presented to Morris S. Frank.

1945 - Delegates from more than 46 nations met in San Francisco to organize the United Nations.

1945 - During World War II, U.S. and Soviet forces linked up on the Elbe River, a meeting that dramatized the collapse of Nazi Germany's defenses.

1953 - The Francis Crick and James Watson article describing the double-helix of DNA is published in the magazine "Nature".

1959 - The St. Lawrence Seaway opened to shipping.

1990 - The Hubble Space Telescope was deployed in orbit from the space shuttle Discovery.

1992 - Islamic forces took over most of Kabul, Afghanistan after the Soviet-controlled government collapsed.

2002 - Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes of the Grammy-winning trio TLC died in an SUV crash in Honduras; she was 30.

2003 - The Georgia state legislature voted to scrap the Confederate flag design from its state flag.

2012 - The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments on Arizona's tough immigration law. (A divided court later threw out major parts of the law.)

2013 - President Barack Obama joined his four living predecessors, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush, to dedicate the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas.

2017 - A federal judge blocked President Donald Trump's attempt to withhold funding from "sanctuary cities" that did not cooperate with U.S. immigration officials, saying the president had no authority to attach new conditions to federal spending.

2018 - Ford Motor Co. said it would get rid of most of its North American car lineup as part of a broad plan to save money and make the company more competitive; the Mustang sports car and a compact Focus crossover vehicle would be the only cars sold in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

2019 - Former Vice President Joe Biden entered the Democratic presidential race, declaring the fight against Donald Trump to be a “battle for the soul of this nation.”

2021 - America's top general in Afghanistan said the U.S. military had begun closing down operations in the country and that Afghanistan's security forces "must be ready" to take over.

2022 - Elon Musk reached an agreement to buy Twitter for roughly $44 billion, promising a more lenient touch to policing content on the social media platform where he -- then the world's richest person -- had made a habit of promoting his interests and attacking his critics to his tens of millions of followers.

1901 - The American League debuted at the Chicago Cricket Club. Chicago defeated Cleveland 8-2.

1945 - Albert B. "Happy" Chandler was unanimously elected baseball commissioner.

1952 - The Minneapolis Lakers defeat the New York Knicks in seven games to win the NBA championship.

1956 - Rocky (Brockton Blockbuster) Marciano retired as the undefeated heavyweight champion of the world. He had 43 knockouts and 3 decisions to his credit.

1963 - Bob Cousy retired from basketball.

1964 - The Toronto Maple Leafs defeat the Detroit Red Wings to win the Stanley Cup.

1965 - The Boston Celtics defeat the Los Angels Lakers in five games to win the NBA championship.

1974 - The NFL votes to move goal posts to the back of the end zone and adopts the sudden death overtime for the playoffs.

1977 - The Cincinnati Reds score 12 runs in the fifth inning in a 23-9 rout of the Atlanta Braves.

1993 - The New England Patriots select Washington State quarterback Drew Bledsoe with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1995 - Petr Nedved (Pittsburgh Penguins) scored the game-winning goal with only 45 seconds left remaining in the fourth overtime period between the Penguins and the Washington Capitals. The game was the third longest in NHL history.

1996 - The Minnesota Twins and the Detroit Tigers combined for the most runs in 26 years. The Twins won with a final score of 24-11.

1997 - Patrick Roy (Colorado Avalanche) got his 89th career playoff win. He passed Billy Smith for the top spot. The game was also Roy's 10th playoff shutout.

2009 - The Detroit Lions select Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

2010 - The NHL implemented a new rule that allowed the NHL Hockey Operations Department to review any hit where the head was targeted and/or the principal point of contact for the purpose of Supplementary Discipline.

2013 - The Kansas City Chiefs select Central Michigan offensive tackle Eric Fisher with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

2019 - The Arizona Cardinals select Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray with the first pick in the NFL Draft.
