1800 - The Library of Congress was established.

1877 - Federal troops were ordered out of New Orleans, ending the North's post-Civil War rule in the South.

1898 - Spain declared war on the United States after rejecting America's ultimatum that Spain withdraw from Cuba.

1915 - The Ottoman Empire rounded up Armenian political and cultural leaders in Constantinople at the start of what many scholars regard as the first genocide of the 20th century, in which an estimated 1.5 million Armenians died.

1916 - The Easter Rebellion begins in Dublin, Ireland. Although unsuccessful, the uprising was an important symbolic event leading to the establishment of the Republic of Ireland.

1953 - Winston Churchill was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.

1960 - Rioting erupted in Biloxi, Miss., after Black protesters staging a “wade-in” at a whites-only beach were attacked by a crowd of hostile whites.

1962 - The Massachusetts Institute of Technology achieved the first satellite relay of a television signal.

1967 - Soviet cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov was killed when his Soyuz 1 spacecraft smashed into the Earth after his parachutes failed to deploy properly during re-entry; he was the first human spaceflight fatality.

1980 - The United States launched an abortive attempt to free the American hostages in Iran; eight U.S. servicemen died.

1990 - The space shuttle Discovery blasted off to place the Hubble Space Telescope into orbit.

1996 - The main assembly of the Palestine Liberation Organization voted to revoke clauses in its charter that called for an armed struggle to destroy Israel.

2005 - Pope Benedict XVI was installed as leader of the Roman Catholic Church in ceremonies at the Vatican.

2009 - Mexico shut down schools, museums, libraries and state-run theaters across its overcrowded capital in hopes of containing a deadly swine flu outbreak.

2019 - Avowed racist John William King was executed in Texas for the 1998 slaying of James Byrd Jr., who was chained to the back of a truck and dragged along a road outside Jasper, Texas; prosecutors said Byrd was targeted because he was Black.

2020 - The recorded U.S. death toll from the coronavirus passed the 50,000 mark.

2020 - President Donald Trump signed a $484 billion measure to aid employers and hospitals under stress from the pandemic.

2020 - The Food and Drug Administration issued an alert about the dangers of using a malaria drug that Trump had repeatedly promoted for coronavirus patients. The parent company of Lysol and another disinfectant warned that its products should not be used as an internal treatment for the coronavirus, a day after Trump wondered aloud about that prospect during a White House briefing.

1961 - Sandy Koufax (Los Angeles Dodgers) struck out 18 batters becoming the first major-league pitcher to do so on two different occasions.

1963 - The Boston Celtics won a fifth consecutive NBA championship, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers.

1967 - The Philadelphia 76ers defeat the San Francisco Warriors in six games to win the NBA championship.

1974 - The NFL grants an expansion franchise to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

1978 - Nolan Ryan of the California Angels strikes out 15 batters in a game for the 20th time in his career.

1988 - The Atlanta Falcons select Auburn tight end Aundray Bruce with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1988 - The following Huskers were selected in the 1988 NFL Draft: DE - Neil Smith (1st round, 2nd pick, Kansas City Chiefs); OT - Tim Rother (4th round, Los Angeles Raiders); RB - Keith Jones (6th round, Los Angeles Rams); TE - Keith Neubert (8th round, New York Jets); DB - Brian Washington (10th round, Cleveland Browns); WR - Hendley Hawkins (11th round, Cleveland Browns); and LB - Steve Forch (11th round, Chicago Bears).

1994 - The Cincinnati Bengals select Ohio State defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1994 - David Robinson of the San Antonio Spurs scored 71 points against the Los Angeles Clippers.

2003 - The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim defeated the Dallas Stars 4-3 in 5 overtime periods in game 1 of the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Petr Sykora scored 48 seconds into the fifth overtime ending the game as the fourth longest game in NHL history. The final time was 140 minutes and 48 seconds.

2004 - The San Diego Chargers select Ole Miss quarterback Eli Manning with the first pick in the NFL Draft, and then immediately trade him to the New York Giants.

2004 - The following Huskers were selected in the 2004 NFL Draft: LB - Demorrio Williams (4th round, Atlanta Falcons); RB - Jammal Lord (6th round, Houston Texans); C - Josh Sewell (6th round, Denver Broncos); DT - Ryon Bingham (7th round, San Diego Chargers); and DE - Trevor Johnson (7th round, New York Jets).
