1616 - English poet and dramatist William Shakespeare died in Stratford-upon-Avon on what has traditionally been regarded as the 52nd anniversary of his birth in 1564.

1789 - President-elect George Washington and his wife moved into the first executive mansion, the Franklin House in New York City.

1791 - James Buchanan, the 15th president of the United States, was born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

1898 - Spain declared war on the United States, which responded in kind two days later.

1940 - About 200 people died in a dance-hall fire in Natchez, Mississippi.

1968 - More than 300 Columbia students barricaded the office of the college dean, charging the university with supporting the Vietnam War and violating Harlem residents’ civil rights.

1969 - Sirhan Sirhan was sentenced to death (later reduced to a life sentence) for the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy.

1985 - Coca-Cola announced its was changing its formula and introduced "New Coke". (Negative public reaction forced the company to revert to the original version.)

1988 - A federal ban on smoking during domestic airline flights of two hours or less went into effect.

1992 - McDonald’s opened its first fast-food restaurant in the Chinese capital of Beijing.

1993 - Labor leader Cesar Chavez died in San Luis, Arizona, at age 66.

1998 - James Earl Ray, who confessed to assassinating the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and then insisted he’d been framed, died at a Nashville, Tennessee, hospital at age 70.

2004 - The U.S. resumed diplomatic relations with Libya.

2005 - The recently created video-sharing website YouTube uploaded its first clip, “Me at the Zoo,” which showed YouTube co-founder Jawed Karim standing in front of an elephant enclosure at the San Diego Zoo.

2007 - Boris Yeltsin, the first freely-elected Russian president, died at age 76.

2010 - Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed the nation's toughest illegal immigration measure into law.

2012 - The government reported that Social Security was rushing even faster toward insolvency, with its trust funds expected to run dry in 2033, three years earlier than previously projected.

2020 - At a White House briefing, President Donald Trump noted that researchers were looking at the effects of disinfectants on the coronavirus, and wondered aloud whether they could be injected into people.

2021 - U.S. health officials lifted an 11-day pause on COVID-19 vaccinations using Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose shot, after scientific advisers decided its benefits outweighed a rare risk of blood clot.

2021 - Reality TV personality and Olympic hero Caitlyn Jenner joined a growing list of Republican candidates seeking to oust Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who was facing a likely recall election. (Newsom would beat back the recall effort in a September vote.)

1914 - In Chicago, IL, the first major league game at Wrigley Field took place. The Federals defeated Kansas City 9-1.

1950 - The Minneapolis Lakers won the first National Basketball Association (NBA) championship when they beat the Syracuse Nationals four games to two.

1950 - Stanley Cup Final, Olympia Stadium, Detroit, MI: Pete Babando scores Cup-winning goal in double overtime of Game 7 as Detroit Red Wings beat NY Rangers, 4-3 for a 4-3 series win

1954 - Hank Aaron of the Milwaukee Braves hit the first of his 755 major-league home runs in a game against the St. Louis Cardinals. (Aaron's career total is second only to Barry Bonds.)

1964 - Ken Johnson (Houston Astros) threw the first no-hitter for a loss. The game was lost 1-0 to the Cincinnati Reds due to two errors.

1989 - The Dallas Cowboys select UCLA quarterback Troy Aikman with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1989 - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar played his last regular season game in the NBA.

2002 - Brent Johson (St. Louis Blues) became the first NHL goalie to win his first 3 wins in the playoffs by shutout. He was only the fourth goalie to record three straight NHL playoff shutouts.

2005 - The San Francisco 49ers select Utah quarterback Alex Smith with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

2020 - The Cincinnati Bengals select LSU quarterback Joe Burrow with the first pick in the NFL Draft.
