1649 - The Maryland Toleration Act, providing for freedom of worship for all Christians, was passed by the Maryland Assembly.

1836 - The Texas Army under the command of Sam Houston, defeated the Mexicans at the Battle of San Jacinto, assuring Texas' independence.

1910 - Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain and author of "Huckleberry Finn", died at age 74 in Redding, Connecticut.

1918 - Baron Manfred von Richthofen, the notorious World War I German flying ace known as the "Red Baron," was killed in action.

1926 - Britain's Queen Elizabeth II was born in Mayfair, London, the eldest child of the Duke and Duchess of York, who later became King George VI and the Queen Mother.

1930 - Fire broke out inside the overcrowded Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus, killing 332 inmates.

1960 - Brazil inaugurated its new capital, Brasilia.

1975 - South Vietnamese President Nguyen Van Thieu resigned.

1976 - Clinical trials of the swine flu vaccine began in Washington, D.C.

1995 - Timothy McVeigh was arrested in connection with the terrorist bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City.

1997 - The ashes of Timothy Leary, Gene Roddenberry and 22 others were blasted into space for the first "space funerals."

1998 - Astronomers announced in Washington that they had discovered possible signs of a new family of planets orbiting a star 220 light-years away, the clearest evidence to date of worlds forming beyond our solar system.

2015 - An Egyptian criminal court sentenced ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi to 20 years in prison over the killing of protesters in 2012. (Morsi collapsed and died during trial on espionage charges in June 2019.)

2016 - Prince, one of the most inventive and influential musicians of modern times, was found dead at his home in suburban Minneapolis; he was 57.

2018 - North Korea announced that it would suspend nuclear tests and intercontinental ballistic missile launches ahead of its summits with South Korea and the United States.

2020 - Researchers reported that a malaria drug that had been widely touted by President Donald Trump for treating the coronavirus showed no benefit in large study of its use in U.S. veterans hospitals.

2022 - CNN shut down its CNN+ streaming service less than a month after its launch, a spectacular flameout for a venture that had attracted stars like Chris Wallace and Alison Roman and was seen as a way to attract a new generation of news consumers.

1948 - The Baltimore Bullets defeat the Philadelphia Warriors to win the Basketball Association of America championship.

1951 - The Rochester Royals defeated the New York Knicks in seven games to win the NBA championship.

1951 - The Toronto Maple Leafs defeat the Montreal Canadiens to win the Stanley Cup.

1980 - Rosie Ruiz won the Boston Marathon when she crossed the finish line in a record time of 2 hours, 31 minutes and 56 seconds. After an investigation, she was stripped of the honor when evidence showed that she had not run the entire race.

1982 - The Atlanta Braves win a record 13th consecutive game to begin the season.

1987 - The Milwaukee Braves suffer their first loss of the season, snapping their season-opening win streak at 13 games, tying them with the 1982 Atlanta Braves for best start to a season.

1984 - David Palmer (Montreal Expos) pitched the fourth shortened, perfect game in major league baseball history. The game was called due to rain after five innings. Palmer had made 57 pitches.

1991 - The Dallas Cowboys select Miami (FL) defensive tackle Russell Maryland with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1994 - Eddie Murray establishes a MLB record by hitting switch-hit home runs in a game for the 11th time in his career.

2001 - The Atlanta Falcons select Virginia Tech quarterback Michael Vick with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

2013 - Joe Scarborough, a 50-year-old self-employed electrical contractor, rolled the first 900 series in Professional Bowlers Association history — three straight perfect games.
