1775 - Benjamin Rush was among those who founded the first American anti-slavery society.

1828 - Noah Webster copyrighted the first edition of his dictionary, the "American Dictionary of the English Language."

1860 - The first Pony Express rider reached his destination of San Francisco. He left St. Joseph, Missouri on April 3.

1865 - President Abraham Lincoln shot and mortally wounded by John Wilkes Booth while attending the comedy "Our American Cousin" at Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C. (He died the next day.)

1894 - The first kinetoscope parlor opened in New York City.

1912 - The Titanic collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic at 11:40 p.m. ship's time and began sinking. (The ship went under two hours and 40 minutes later with the loss of 1,514 lives.)

1935 - The "Black Sunday" dust storm descended upon the central Plains, turning a sunny afternoon into total darkness.

1960 - Tamla Records and Motown Records, founded by Berry Gordy Jr., were incorporated as Motown Record Corp.

1965 - The state of Kansas hanged Richard Hickock and Perry Smith for the 1959 “In Cold Blood” murders of Herbert Clutter, his wife, Bonnie, and two of their children, Nancy and Kenyon.

1969 - In a record-breaking night at the Academy Awards, a tie between Katherine Hepburn and Barbara Streisand resulted in the two sharing the Best Actress Oscar, and Hepburn broke the record as the only actress to win the award three times.

1970 - President Richard Nixon nominated Harry Blackmun to the U.S. Supreme Court. (The choice of Blackmun, who was unanimously confirmed by the Senate a month later, followed the failed nominations of Clement Haynsworth and G. Harrold Carswell.)

1981 - The first test flight of America’s first operational space shuttle, the Columbia, ended successfully with a landing at Edwards Air Force Base in California.

1994 - Two U.S. Air Force F-15 warplanes mistakenly shot down two U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopters over northern Iraq, killing 26 people, including 15 Americans.

1999 - NATO mistakenly bombed a convoy of ethnic Albanian refugees; Yugoslav officials said 75 people were killed.

2002 - Hugo Chavez returned as president of Venezuela after being forced out of office two days earlier.

2003 - Abu Abbas, the leader of the terrorist group Palestine Liberation Front when the group hijacked the liner Achille Lauro, was captured by U.S. forces in Iraq.

2004 - In a historic policy shift, President George W. Bush endorsed Israel’s plan to hold on to part of the West Bank in any final peace settlement with the Palestinians; he also ruled out Palestinian refugees returning to Israel, bringing strong criticism from the Palestinians.

2010 - An explosion in the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland resulted in a volcanic ash plume in the atmosphere over northern and central Europe. Air travel in the region is halted for several days.

2011 - North Korean confirmed it was holding an American who was detained in November 2010, reportedly for proselytizing. (Eddie Jun was freed in May 2011.)

2011 - ABC canceled two of its longtime daytime soap operas, "One Life to Live" and "All My Children".

2020 - President Donald Trump announced that he was cutting off U.S. payments to the U.N. health agency, the World Health Organization; Trump said it had not done enough to stop the coronavirus from spreading.

1910 - President William Howard Taft became the first U.S. chief executive to throw the ceremonial first pitch at a baseball game as the Washington Senators defeated the Philadelphia Athletics 3-0.

1925 - WGN became the first radio station to broadcast a regular season major league baseball game. The Cubs beat the Pirates 8-2.

1928 - The New York Rangers defeated the Montreal Maroons to win the Stanley Cup.

1931 - The Montreal Canadiens defeated the Chicago Blackhawks to win the Stanley Cup.

1948 - The Toronto Maple Leafs defeat the Detroit Red Wings to win the Stanley Cup.

1955 - The Detroit Red Wings defeat the Montreal Canadiens to win the Stanley Cup.

1960 - The Montreal Canadiens won their fifth consecutive Stanley Cup, defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-0 in Game 4 of the Finals.

1962 - Elgin Baylor (Los Angeles Lakers) scored 61 points in Game 5 against the Boston Celtics to set an NBA Finals record.

1969 - For the first time, a major league baseball game was played in Montreal, Canada.

1974 - Gary Player wins his second Masters.

1985 - Bernhard Langer wins the Masters, the first winner from Germany.

1991 - For the fourth straight year a player from the United Kingdom wins the Masters as Ian Woosnam takes the victory.

1996 - Nick Faldo wins his third Masters; it was the sixth and final major of his career.

1996 - The Detroit Red Wings won their 62nd game of the season to establish a new NHL record.

1997 - Allen Iverson of the Philadelphia 76ers scored 40 or more points in a fifth consecutive game.

1999 - Jose Canseco (Tampa Bay) became the 28th player to hit 400 career home runs. He was also the first non-United States born player to hit 400 runs.

2002 - Tiger Woods became the third player to ever win back-to-back Masters titles; it was the third Masters win in his career.

2013 - Adam Scott wins the Masters and becomes the first Australian winner of the tournament.

2019 - Tiger Woods wins his fifth Masters by one stroke over Xander Schauffele, Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka; it is Woods' 15th major of his career and first major victory in 11 years.

2020 - NASCAR driver Kyle Larson was fired by the Chip Ganassi Racing team, two days after he used a racial slur on a live stream of a virtual race.
