1775 - Benjamin Rush was among those who founded the first American anti-slavery society.

1828 - Noah Webster completed the first edition of his dictionary.

1860 - The first Pony Express rider reached his destination of San Francisco. (He had left St. Joseph, Missouri on April 3.)

1865 - President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth while attending a performance of "Our American Cousin" at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C.

1894 - The first kinetoscope parlor opened in New York City.

1902 - James Cash Penney opened his first store, The Golden Rule, in Kemmerer, Wyoming.

1912 - The British liner RMS Titanic collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic at 11:40 p.m. ship’s time and began sinking. (The ship went under two hours and 40 minutes later with the loss of 1,514 lives.)

1935 - The "Black Sunday" dust storm descended upon the Central Plains, turning a sunny afternoon into total darkness.

1949 - The "Wilhelmstrasse Trial" in Nuremberg ended with 19 former Nazi Foreign Office officials sentenced by an American tribunal to prison terms ranging from four to 25 years.

1960 - Tamla Records and Motown Records, founded by Berry Gordy Jr., were incorporated as Motown Record Corp.

1969 - In a record-breaking night at the Academy Awards, a tie between Katharine Hepburn and Barbara Streisand resulted in the two sharing the Best Actress Oscar and Hepburn broke the record as the only actress to win three Best Actress awards.

1981 - The first test flight of America's first operational space shuttle, the Columbia, ended successfully with a landing at Edwards Air Force Base in California.

1994 - Two U.S. Air Force F-15 warplanes mistakenly shot down two U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopters over northern Iraq, killing 26 people, including 15 Americans.

2002 - Hugo Chavez returned as president of Venezuela after being forced out of office two days earlier.

2003 - Abu Abbas, the leader of the terrorist Palestine Liberation Front when the group hijacked the liner Achille Lauro, was captured by American forces in Iraq.

2007 - Riot police beat and detained protesters as thousands defied an official ban and attempted to stage a rally in Moscow against President Vladimir Putin's government.

2010 - An explosion in the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland resulted in a volcanic ash plume in the atmosphere over northern and central Europe that halted air travel in the region for weeks.

2013 - Hugo Chavez’s hand-picked successor, Nicolas Maduro, won Venezuela’s presidential election by a narrow margin over challenger Henrique Capriles.

2018 - President Donald Trump declared “Mission Accomplished” for a U.S.-led allied missile attack on Syria’s chemical weapons program, but the Pentagon said the Assad government was still capable of using chemical weapons against civilians if it chose to do so.

2021 - A white former suburban Minneapolis police officer, Kim Potter, was charged with second-degree manslaughter for killing 20-year-old Black motorist Daunte Wright in a shooting that ignited days of unrest.

2022 - Tesla CEO Elon Musk offered to buy Twitter, saying the social media platform he criticized for not living up to free speech principles needed to be transformed as a private company. (Musk would become Twitter’s owner about six months later.)

1910 - President William Howard Taft became the first president to throw the ceremonial first pitch at a baseball game as the Washington Senators defeated the Philadelphia Athletics 3-0.

1925 - WGN became the first radio station to broadcast a regular season major league baseball game. The Cubs beat the Pirates 8-2.

1928 - The New York Rangers defeated the Montreal Maroons to win the Stanley Cup.

1931 - The Montreal Canadiens defeated the Chicago Blackhawks to win the Stanley Cup.

1948 - The Toronto Maple Leafs sweep the Detroit Red Wings to win the Stanley Cup.

1955 - The Detroit Red Wings defeat the Montreal Canadiens in seven games to win the Stanley Cup.

1960 - The Montreal Canadiens defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs to win a fifth consecutive Stanley Cup.

1962 - Elgin Baylor (Los Angeles Lakers) scored 61 points in Game 5 against the Boston Celtics to set an NBA Finals record.

1968 - The New York Knicks defeat the San Diego Rockets 114-102 in the first NBA game played in the iconic Madison Square Garden.

1969 - The first regular-season MLB game held outside the United States takes place in Montreal, where the Montreal Expos defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 8-7.

1974 - Gary Player wins his second Masters.

1994 - The New Jersey Devils finish the regular season at 47-25-12 for a NHL record 106 points.

1996 - Nick Faldo wins his third Masters and sixth and final major of his career.

1996 - The Detroit Red Wings win an NHL record 62nd game of the year.

1997 - Allen Iverson (Philadelphia 76ers) scored 40 or more points in his fifth consecutive game.

1999 - Jose Canseco (Tampa Bay) became the 28th player to hit 400 career home runs. He was also the first non-United States born player to hit 400 runs.

2002 - Tiger Woods became the third player to win back-to-back Masters titles. It was the third Masters title of his career.

2013 - Adam Scott became the first Australian to win the Masters, beating Angel Cabrera on the second hole of a playoff on a rainy day at Augusta National.

2019 - Tiger Woods win his fifth Masters; it was also the 15th major of his career and first major victory in 11 years.
