1598 - King Henry IV of France signed the Edict of Nantes gave religious tolerance to the Huguenots in France.

1743 - Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, was born in Shadwell in the Virginia Colony.

1861 - At the start of the Civil War, Fort Sumter in South Carolina fell to Confederate forces as the Union commander, Maj. Robert Anderson, agreed to surrender in the face of relentless bombardment.

1943 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C., on the 200th anniversary of the third American president’s birth.

1964 - Sidney Poitier became the first African-American to win the Academy Award for best actor.

1970 - Apollo 13 announced the now-iconic line, "Houston, we've got a problem," when an oxygen tank burst on its voyage to the moon.

1975 - Civil war began in Lebanon when gunmen killed four Christian Phalangists who retaliate by killing 27 Palestinians.

1986 - Pope John Paul II visited a Rome synagogue in the first recorded papal visit of its kind.

1999 - Jack Kervorkian was sentenced in Pontiac, Michigan, to 10 to 25 years in prison for the second-degree murder of a man whose assisted suicide was videotaped and shown on "60 Minutes."

2005 - A defiant Eric Rudolph pleaded guilty to carrying out the deadly bombing at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and three other attacks in back-to-back court appearances in Birmingham, Alabama, and Atlanta.

2009 - Music producer Phil Spector was found guilty by a Los Angeles jury of second-degree murder in the shooting of actor Lana Clarkson (he was later sentenced to 19 years to life in prison; he died in prison in January 2021).

2011 - Ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and his two sons were detained for investigation of corruption, abuse of power and killings of protesters.

2012 - Kwangmy'ngs-ng-3, a North Korean Earth observation satellite, exploded shortly after its launch. The U.S. and other countries called the launch a violation of United Nations Security Council rules.

2012 - President Barack Obama arrived in Cartagena, Colombia, to attend the Summit of the Americas; however, the visit was overshadowed by a prostitution scandal involving a group of Secret Service agents and officers who had gone to Cartagena to prepare for the president’s trip.

2017 - Pentagon officials said U.S. forces in Afghanistan had struck an Islamic State tunnel complex in eastern Afghanistan with “the mother of all bombs,” the largest non-nuclear weapon ever used in combat by the U.S. military.

2021 - U.S. health officials recommended a “pause” in use of the single-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine to investigate reports of rare but potentially dangerous blood clots, setting off a chain reaction worldwide and dealing a setback to the global vaccination campaign. (Officials lifted the pause on vaccinations 11 days later.)

1927 - The Ottawa Senators defeated the Boston Bruins to win the Stanley Cup.

1933 - The New York Rangers defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs to win the Stanley Cup.

1940 - The New York Rangers defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs to win the Stanley Cup. (The Rangers would not win the Cup again for 54 years.)

1942 - Byron Nelson wins the Masters.

1944 - The Montreal Canadiens defeat the Chicago Blackhawks to win the Stanley Cup.

1949 - The Minneapolis Lakers defeat the Washington Capitols in six games to win the Basketball Association of America championship. (The BAA and the National Basketball League would merge later in the year to form the present-day NBA.)

1954 - Baseball Hall of Famer Hank Aaron made his major league debut with the Milwaukee Braves.

1957 - The Boston Celtics won their first NBA Championship. They beat the St. Louis Hawks 125-123 in Game 7.

1963 - Pete Rose (Cincinnati Reds) got his first hit in the major leagues.

1972 - Major league baseball owners and players agreed to not make up the games lost to the players strike. It was the first strike in the history of major league baseball. Players had walked off the field 13 days earlier.

1975 - Jack Nicklaus wins his fifth Masters.

1980 - Seve Ballesteros wins his first Masters.

1984 - Pete Rose becomes the first player in National League history to record 4,000 career hits.

1986 - Jack Nicklaus, at age 46, win his record sixth Masters; the victory was also Nicklaus' 18th career major.

1986 - The Boston Celtics end the regular season with an NBA record 40-1 record at home.

1997 - Tiger Woods, at age 21, became the youngest golfer to ever win the Masters and also the first African-American golfer to win a major championship; Woods also set a tournament record when he finished at 18-under (270).

2003 - Mike Weir became the first Canadian to win the Masters Tournament.

2004 - Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants hit his 661st home run, passing Willie Mays into third place on the all-time list.

2008 - Trevor Immelman wins the Masters.

2011 - A federal jury in San Francisco convicted Barry Bonds of obstruction of justice, but failed to reach a verdict on allegations that he'd used steroids and lied to a grand jury about it. (Bonds’ conviction for obstruction was ultimately overturned.)

2012 - Jennifer Capriati was elected to the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

2014 - Bubba Watson wins his second Masters.

2016 - The Golden State Warriors set the NBA record for most wins in a regular season, ending with a 73-9 record, breaking the prior record of 72-10 set by the Chicago Bulls in 1996.

2016 - Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers scored 60 points in the final game of his 20-year NBA career.

2019 - Gregg Popovich surpasses Lenny Wilkens to become the all-time winningest coach in NBA history with 1,413 victories.
