1598 - The Edict of Nantes gave religious tolerance to the Huguenots in France.

1613 - Pocahontas, daughter of Chief Powhatan, was captured by English Capt. Samuel Argall in the Virginia Colony. (During a yearlong captivity, Pocahontas converted to Christianity and ultimately opted to stay with the English.)

1742 - “Messiah,” the oratorio by George Frideric Handel featuring the “Hallelujah” chorus, had its first public performance in Dublin, Ireland.

1743 - Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, was born in Shadwell in the Virginia Colony.

1861 - At the start of the Civil War, Fort Sumter in South Carolina fell to Confederate forces as the Union commander, Maj. Robert Anderson, agreed to surrender in the face of relentless bombardment.

1870 - The Metropolitan Museum of Art was incorporated in New York. (The original museum opened in 1872.)

1943 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C. on the 200th anniversary of the third American president's birth.

1964 - Sidney Poitier became the first African American actor to win an Academy Award for best actor, for "Lilies of the Field."

1970 - Apollo 13 announced the now iconic message, "Houston, we've got a problem....." when an oxygen tank burst on the way to the Moon, severely crippling the spacecraft.

1975 - Civil War began in Lebanon when gunmen killed four Christian Phalangists who retaliated by killing 27 Palestinians.

1986 - Pope John Paul II visited a Rome synagogue in the first recorded papal visit of its kind.

1992 - The Great Chicago Flood took place as the city's century-old tunnel system and adjacent basements filled with water from the Chicago River.

1999 - Jack Kevorkian was sentenced in Pontiac, Michigan to 10 to 25 years in prison for the second-degree murder of a man whose assisted suicide was videotaped and shown on "60 Minutes." (Kevorkian ended up serving eight years.)

2005 - A defiant Eric Rudolph pleaded guilty to carrying out the deadly bombing at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and three other attacks in back-to-back court appearances in Birmingham, Alabama, and Atlanta.

2011 - Ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and his two sons were detained for investigation of corruption, abuse of power and killings of protesters.

2012 - A North Korean Earth observation satellite exploded shortly after its launch. The U.S. and other countries called the launch a violation of United Nations Security Council rules.

2015 - A federal judge in Washington sentenced former Blackwater security guard Nicholas Slatten to life in prison and three others to 30-year terms for their roles in a 2007 shooting in Baghdad’s Nisoor Square that killed 14 Iraqi civilians and wounded 17 others.

1927 - The Ottawa Senators defeat the Boston Bruins to win the Stanley Cup.

1933 - The New York Rangers defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs to win the Stanley Cup.

1940 - The New York Rangers defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs to win the Stanley Cup. (The Rangers would not win another cup for 54 years.)

1942 - Byron Nelson wins an 18-hole playoff to win the Masters by one stroke over Ben Hogan.

1944 - The Montreal Canadiens defeat the Chicago Blackhawks in four games to win the Stanley Cup.

1949 - The Minneapolis Lakers defeat the Washington Capitals in six games to win the Basketball Association of America championship. (The BAA and the National Basketball League would merge to form the NBA later that year.)

1954 - Baseball Hall of Famer Hank Aaron made his major league debut with the Milwaukee Braves.

1957 - The Boston Celtics won their first NBA championship, defeating the St. Louis Hawks in seven games.

1963 - Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds recorded the first of what would become his career record major league hits.

1972 - Major league baseball owners and players agreed to not make up the games lost to the players strike. It was the first strike in the history of major league baseball. Players had walked off the field 13 days earlier.

1975 - Jack Nicklaus wins his fifth Masters.

1980 - Seve Ballesteros wins his first Masters.

1984 - Pete Rose records his 4,000th career hit.

1986 - Jack Nicklaus, at age 46, won his sixth Masters championship.

1986 - The Boston Celtics end the regular season with a 40-1 home record.

1997 - Tiger Woods, at age 21, became the youngest person to win the Masters and the first player of African descent to win a major golf title. Woods also set a record with an 18-under 270 score.

1997 - The Hartford Whalers play their final NHL game.

2003 - Mike Weir became the first Canadian to win the Masters.

2004 - Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants hit his 661st home run, passing Willie Mays to move into third place on baseball's all-time list.

2008 - Trevor Immelman wins the Masters.

2011 - A federal jury in San Francisco convicted Barry Bonds of obstruction of justice, but failed to reach a verdict on allegations that he'd used steroids and lied to a grand jury about it. (Bonds’ conviction for obstruction was ultimately overturned.)

2014 - Bubba Watson wins his second Masters.

2016 - The Golden State Warriors established a new mark for best regular season in NBA history with a record of 73-9, breaking the record of 72-10 set by the 1995-1996 Chicago Bulls.

2016 - Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers scored 60 points in his final game, wrapping up a 20-year NBA career.

2019 - Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs surpasses Lenny Wilkens to become the all-time winningest coach in NBA history with his 1,413th win.

2020 - The XFL, a spring professional football league backed by WWE, filed for bankruptcy.
