1790 - The U.S. patent system was formed.

1849 - The safety pin was patented by Walter Hunt in New York.

1866 - The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was chartered.

1912 - The Titanic set sail from Southampton, England on its ill-fated maiden voyage.

1925 - "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald was published.

1932 - Adolf Hitler came in second in voting for German president to the incumbent, Paul von Hindenburg.

1963 - The atomic-powered submarine Thresher sank off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, claiming 129 lives.

1970 - Paul McCartney announced the official split of the Beatles.

1972 - The United States joined the Soviet Union and 70 other nations in signing an agreement banning biological warfare.

1974 - Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir announced her resignation.

1981 - Imprisoned IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands won election to the British Parliament.

1992 - Comedian Sam Kinison was killed in a car crash outside Needles, California at age 38.

1992 - Financier Charles Keating Jr. was sentenced in Los Angeles to nine years in prison for swindling investors when his Lincoln Savings and Loan collapsed. (The convictions were later overturned.)

1998 - The Northern Ireland "Good Friday Accord" was reached, a landmark settlement that called for Protestants and Catholics to share power.

2001 - The Netherlands legalized mercy killings and assisted suicide for patients with unbearable, terminal illness.

2003 - The House of Representatives passed the "Amber Alert" bill. It provided a system for alerting the public about missing or abducted children.

2010 - Polish President Lech Kaczynski was killed in a plane crash in western Russia that also claimed the lives of his wife and top Polish political, military and church officials.

2015 - The Apple Watch made its debut.

2019 - Scientists released the first image ever made of a black hole, revealing a fiery, doughnut-shaped object in a galaxy 53 million light-years from earth.

2020 - The worldwide death toll from the coronavirus surged past 100,000.

1916 - The Professional Golfers Association of America (PGA) is founded and holds its first championship tournament.

1934 - The Chicago Blackhawks defeat the Detroit Red Wings in four games to win the Stanley Cup.

1947 - Branch Rickey of the Brooklyn Dodgers announced the signing of Jackie Robinson to the team.

1949 - Sam Snead wins his first Masters.

1953 - The Minneapolis Lakers defeat the New York Knicks in five games to win the NBA championship.

1955 - The Syracuse Nationals defeat the Fort Wayne Pistons in seven games to win the NBA championship.

1956 - The Montreal Canadiens defeat the Detroit Red Wings in five games for the Stanley Cup.

1960 - Arnold Palmer wins his second Masters championship.
