1778 - Oliver Pollack created the dollar sign "$".

1789 - Frederick Muhlenberg of Pennsylvania is elected the first Speaker of the House of Representatives.

1853 - Cincinnati, Ohio, became the first U.S. city to pay its firefighters a regular salary.

1918 - Britain's Royal Air Force was established.

1933 - The Nazi persecution of Jews began in Germany, with a boycott of Jewish businesses.

1945 - American forces landed on Okinawa during World War II.

1954 - President Dwight D. Eisenhower authorized the creation of the United States Air Force Academy.

1960 - TIROS-1, the world's first meteorological satellite, was launched.

1963 - The daytime soap opera General Hospital first aired on ABC-TV.

1970 - President Richard Nixon signed a bill into law banning cigarette ads from radio and television.

1975 - With Khmer Rouge guerrillas closing in, Cambodian President Lon Nol resigned and fled into exile, spending the rest of his life in the United States.

1976 - Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs and Ronald Wayne founded Apple Computer.

1977 - The U.S. Senate followed the example of the House of Representatives by adopting, 86-9, a stringent code of ethics requiring full financial disclosure and limits on outside income.

1979 - Ayatollah Khomeini proclaimed Iran to be an Islamic Republic.

1984 - Singer Marvin Gaye, age 44, was shot and killed by his father, Marvin Gay Sr. (The elder Gay pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and received probation.)

1987 - In his first major speech on the epidemic, President Ronald Reagan told doctors in Philadelphia, "We've declared AIDS public health enemy No. 1."

1999 - A New Jersey man was arrested and charged with originating the "Melissa" e-mail virus, which infected more than 1 million computers worldwide.

2001 - Former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic was arrested on corruption charges.

2003 - American troops rescued Army Pfc. Jessica Lynch from a hospital in Nasiriyah, Iraq, where she had been held prisoner since her unit was ambushed nine days earlier.

2004 - President George W. Bush signed the "Laci Peterson" bill, making it a separate federal crime to harm a fetus during an attack on the mother.

2008 - The Pentagon made public a legal memo dated March 14, 2003, that approved the use of harsh interrogation techniques against terror suspects.

2009 - Sweden becomes the fifth European country to legalize same-sex marriage.

2020 - President Donald Trump acknowledged that the federal stockpile of personal protective equipment used by doctors and nurses was nearly depleted, and he warned of some “horrific” days ahead for the country. Resisting calls to issue a national stay-at-home order, Trump said he wanted to give governors “flexibility” to respond to the coronavirus.

1919 - The final game of the 1919 Stanley Cup was canceled due to the worldwide epidemic of influenza. No winner was declared in the series between the Montreal Canadiens and the Seattle Metropolitans.

1931 - Jackie Mitchell became the first female in professional baseball when she signed with the Chattanooga Baseball Club.

1970 - Bud Selig buys the bankrupt Seattle Pilots major league baseball franchise for $10.8 million and moves the club to Milwaukee to become the Brewers.

1972 - The first Major League Baseball players’ strike began; it lasted 12 days and led to the cancellation of 86 games.

1973 - Boston Celtics captain John Havlicek scores career high 54 points in 134-109 rout of Atlanta Hawks in Game 1 of 1st round Eastern Conference playoffs; hits NBA playoff record 24-of-36 field-goal attempts.

1978 - Mike Bossy (New York Islanders) became the first NHL rookie to score 50 goals in a season.

1983 - Mike Bossy (New York Islanders) became the first National Hockey League (NHL) player to score 60 goals in 3 consecutive seasons.

1984 - USC defeats Tennessee 72-61 to win the NCAA Women's Tournament.

1985 - Villanova defeats Georgetown 84-75 to become the lowest-seeded team to date (#8) to win the NCAA Tournament.

1989 - A. Bartlett Giamatti replaces Peter Ueberroth as the seventh commissioner of Major League Baseball. (He would die suddenly from a heart attack five months later.)

1990 - Stanford defeats Auburn 88-81 to win the NCAA Women's Tournament.

1990 - WrestleMania VI is held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The main event saw The Ultimate Warrior defeat Hulk Hogan to win the WWF Championship.

1991 - Duke defeats Kansas 72-65 to win their first NCAA Tournament.

1992 - The National Hockey League Players’ Association went on its first-ever strike, which lasted 10 days.

1996 - Kentucky defeats Syracuse 76-67 to win their sixth NCAA Tournament.

1999 - Detroit Pistons guard Joe Dumars becomes 10th player in NBA history to play 1,000 games with the same team and one of 8 to play 1,000 games with his only team; scores 18 points in 107-75 rout of Chicago Bulls.

1999 - Philadelphia 76ers head coach Larry Brown wins his 900th pro game with an 88-84 win over Miami Heat; Brown record: 671-547 NBA, 229-107 ABA, combined 900-654.

2001 - Notre Dame defeats Purdue 68-66 to win the NCAA Women's Tournament.

2001 - WrestleMania X-Seven is held in Houston. The main event saw Stone Cold Steve Austin defeat The Rock to win the WWF Championship.

2002 - Maryland defeats Indiana 64-52 to win the NCAA Tournament.

2007 - WrestleMania 23 is held in Detroit. The top matches on the card saw The Undertaker defeat Batista to win the World Heavyweight Championship and John Cena defeat Shawn Michaels for the WWF Championship.

2012 - WrestleMania XXVIII is held in Miami. Sheamus defeated Daniel Bryan for the World Heavyweight Championship, CM Punk defeated Chris Jericho for the WWE Championship, and The Rock defeated John Cena in the top matches on the card.

2016 - The Golden State Warriors NBA-record home winning streak ends at 54 games with a 109-106 loss to the Boston Celtics; the Warriors had not lost at Oracle Arena since January of 2015.

2020 - England’s Wimbledon tennis tournament was canceled for the first time since World War II due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
