Some thoughts on Rhule and Penn State

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried and I think it’s naive for any Husker fan to declare that he won’t leave. We are talking about a guy that has always left when a big opportunity came or what he felt was the right one.

I’m probably being pessimistic but if he gets offered the job, I expect him to leave. It’s his Alma mater post death penalty. Franklin brought talent and a good culture there and it’s his home.

What I will say is this, I’m thankful that he came to coach here. Nebraska is now in a situation that if he leaves, will be the best opening for us in the past 20+ years. Bo had fans and a good track record and Nebraska was blamed a bit for his firing. Riley didn’t improve the program but did have a good season. Frost took a struggling program and buried it. Thankful that Rhule has turned the culture and has us on an upward trajectory. We could go get a good football coach and I think Dannen is a good AD that would make a good hire.

The best case scenario is that we go 9-3 10-2 and even if Rhule leaves, that’s a hell of a place to be replacing a coach from. Embrace the team, let’s root for success and let the chips fall where they may.

I won't speak in absolutes but I think Rhule to PSU is very unlikely for both sides. It doesn't matter that Kraft and Rhule are friends. Rhule doesn't have to appeal to Kraft, he has to appeal to their boosters and fans and he doesn't. They'll need to strike out on a lot of candidates before Rhule is considered.

Rhule mentioned his girls watching the games from the stands while Franklin's kids were getting yelled at by PSU fans. That resonated with Rhule because of how hard he worked in Carolina and how him and his family were treated.

The margin for error at PSU is razor thin. You don't have to be a top 10 program there -- you have to be a top 5 program, otherwise they'll fire you.

The list of guys late in their careers who would be happier in a situation like that than their current spot starts and ends with Brian Kelly

I will go with the comments about his kids, his love of the players...and that his wife decides where they live. My bet, she loves it here in this community. Call it all 'feels', but sometimes going 'Home' isn't always the best option for your quality of life.

Nebraska comes with its fair share of pressures...Penn St. for Rhule, would be a whole different level of pressure to put on the family.

How good is Penn states nil? Srs.
Never really hear about them in the top tier of nil teams nor do they seem to kill it every year in the portal.

I just don't see him making that move. PSU's expectations are out of whack. I also don't think the Alumni aspect is actually beneficial for PSU's chances.

All that said, I think PSU would be getting a good coach if they did get Rhule.

I'll also say that if Rhule leaves, that's not a good place for Nebraska to be.

They spent near the top this year on their roster. North of $40 if you trust reporting.

The reason he was fired is because it flopped and their boosters probably weren't game to go all in again with him

It felt like the right time/situation as ever for Frost to give it a shot.

It feels like not quite the right time for Rhule given where Penn State already is and what he specializes in.

If it’s really your dream job you take it whenever it’s offered

If anything bites us in the ass in this situation it'll be The Nebraska Way

I agree with this. Rhule was handed the keys to an old corvette that looked like her best days were behind her. He's got unlimited resources to rebuild her and her once proud owners aren't nearly as proud as they once were. Everyone is patiently waiting to see her purrrrr again.

Penn State is a souped up Ferrari with all of the modern trimmings....She just lost a wheel and her owners dumped the driver for the next Mario Andretti in the hopes for a quick fix and a brand new look.

Rhule is in a great place at NU.

I’m guessing the Penn State AD and money folks will completely agree with this statement.

If their NCAA sanction period had just ended or was ending this year and he’s in the middle of year three at Baylor, different conversation.

They’re not a downtrodden program without a culture or roster. They need someone who’s an ‘Over the hump’ guy, not an ‘Out of the dumpster’ guy.

He’s also mentioned before that his wife has said she’s not leaving Nebraska until their kids are out of school. I’m sure it was a terribly hard decision for them to leave charlotte when his son only had one year left which is why I think he very strongly considered getting in to media/coaching HS football in charlotte.

If Terry Smith, their interim, goes 4-2 and manages to beat either Indiana or OSU, he’s getting the job over Rhule.

Smith has been there 12 years and is also a former player. He coached at Temple one year when Rhule was head coach. Feels like it’d be a case of Rhule stealing the job from Smith if Smith salvages this season for PSU.
