The transfer portal comings and goings are gonna be huge for the next few weeks at least. (if not more) Here are some thoughts I had about what we are seeing in terms of early offers and what it might mean for how the staff feels our current roster shakes out. I think we obviously take one as only one is needed.......at the most two.
WRs: Nebraska seems to have gone in early on a few of the quality names in the portal at WR. For example Tyrese Chambers is a top shelf target from FIU and seems to be a Toure replacement but I think replacing Toure is for more than just the on field production. It is needed because as of right now we dont have a true and established #1 WR.
Bear with me a moment.......We have a ton of young talent at WR albeit pretty inexperienced.
Betts, Brown, Nixon
Neville, Hardy, Grimes
We also still have Martin and Manning being the upper classmen.
So why bring in a WR transfer? I think its because Frost doesn't trust that the 3 with the most experience will last the whole year. Martin has had injury issues. Betts seems to be "injured" or dinged up repeatedly (seemingly after routine tackles) and Manning is still a total enigma. He flashes pro potential the disappears. It is also known by now that he has struggles with mental issues.
So I think they are looking for a proven WR (again maybe two) to come in and solidify the room again much like Toure did and have another more experienced body to count on in the brutal Big 10.
So as and Example we would have (9) schollie WR assuming nobody transfers out. (which seems unlikely at this point)
Martin, Manning, Transfer guy
Betts, Brown, Nixon
Neville, Hardy, Grimes
Agree/Disagree?
Next.......The Mickey Joseph factor: This is the wildcard of all wildcards that has me actually excited about the WR. I expect him to do everything that Nebraska needs him to do in terms of attracting the top transfer targets AND taking the young dudes in the room and turn them into the weapons we need. He should able to unlock the potential of Manning and Betts while getting the others ready to contribute. I also think that anybody thinking of transferring out might be more likely to stay now. I can't imagine how excited the WR room must be to have him come in with his national championship pedigree and NFL star filled player development resume. His recruiting should be key as well and he is in luck since 2 of Nebraska's top WR targets for 23 are actually from Nebraska.
The MJ hire is exactly what Nebraska needed. Can Frost pull another rabbit out of his hat at OC or OL?
