I had a killer phpbb board back in the day

That's what my site eventually ran. The best free host that I could find back then let you run Perl CGI scripts, but no database. So I ran a board called YaBB. (Simple Machines is a fork of a PHP-based rewrite of YaBB.) which looked and worked great from the end user's perspective, but stored its data in plain text files (yikes). Eventually one of its index files got trashed and it was a whole big ordeal to rebuild it, so I knew I had to get off of that.

Next step was to move the site to a paid host, and then move the site to PHP Nuke and its hacked up version of phpBB 1.x. That was, well, hacky, so I moved it to 'pure' phpBB when 2.0 was in beta.
