Saban thoughts on modern offense

Nick Saban - Philosophy Evolution

- "I changed my philosophy when Lane (Kiffin) came here. We said we got to outscore them."

- "We don't control the ball on offense, we score."

- "I grew up with the idea that you play good defense, you run the ball, you control vertical field position on special teams and you're going to win. Whoever rushes the ball for the most yards is going to win the game. You're not going to win anything now doing that."

With Holgo as our OC and that new dual threat QB this is clearly the direction Matt Rhule is moving toward

We win 10+ in 2026 and go to the playoffs

Well when you have the talent level and depth on D that he had you can do it. Imagine NU trying to do it last season. They have to play control the clock, protect the defense, hope it’s close to win it in the fourth. That was the strat.

That's true if you're Alabama and have a stacked team, especially at the skill positions. Not so true for the rest of CFB.

If you're playing a more talented team that can score at will you need to run the ball and limit your opponent's possessions. You won't win a shootout.

Do we average 40 points per game next year

This is exactly what every team that played a dominant Nebraska team of years gone by used to do if they wanted to stick around. It’s a recipe the service academies have used for years to stick with more talented teams as well.

We’re not in a position to shoot it out with anyone right now, which is why I think we’re kind of in no mans land between what we can run effectively and what we want to run. Rhule year 1 was obviously the worst, but these past two years are still some version of ‘acceptance’ from an offensive philosophy standpoint.

HELL NO! Even if we can blow out one of the non-cons. This team will have a limited running attack, a question at QB, and a receiving corp without a true alpha/playmaker. Do we even need to talk about the OL?
