Thoughts?

Personally, I like him as a candidate and have him in high on my personal most wanted list.

In theory, if Rhule gets fired soon and Turd likes him he could hire him while Nebraska’s season is still in progress. I’d be curious what kind of access Rhule would be able to have and what he’d be able to do at that point. I’m trying to think of a similar situation in the past, but I can’t think of any precedent to this (hypothetical) scenario.

Urban was hired as coach during the season at Ohio St. I believe he let Fickel continue to coach the team and he just started recruiting plus getting to know the current staff.

I've been warming up to the idea of Aranda again. I really want to keep Mickey around and I don't think he wins enough to keep him as HC. I think hiring Aranda guarantees Mick keeps his job.

I'll allow Rhule if he agrees to keep Mick.

I would hope that whoever we hire would be smart enough to keep Mickey around (assuming Mickey wants to stay around).

I agree it makes a lot of sense to keep him but Mickey obviously has Turd's ear. If you're a new HC coming in with no relationship with Mickey or Turd would you really want an assistant whose opinion means more to the AD than yours?

Should be a minor issue but if your opinions are different on a recruit, another assistant, etc Turd is going to side with Mickey probably 9/10 times. That would be a shitty dynamic.

I’m also on the fence about Rhule. He clearly did very well in college but it’s a pretty small sample size.

Plus as a Panthers fan I read about how shitty he is everyday
The college and pro game is vastly different but its not nothing that he sucked as a pro coach. My biggest concern is that his record against ranked teams is abysmal. As you said it's a small sample so can't dwell on it too much. Does it mean when facing good coaches he struggles?

I forgot about his record against ranked teams. Yeah, that’s a red flag too.

Just chiming in here as the third wheel since there is just the three of us. I'm not set on Rhule either. Not happy about hiring someone who was just fired from a previous coaching gig regardless if it's pro/college.

Optimistic scenario:

Clearly Rhule knows how to turn shit around. If you can make Temple competitive you can make anyone competitive.

Mickey and Busch can fucking croot.

Between the 3 of them they have a lot of connections in college. There's other assistants I'd keel Applewhite, Becton maybe Fisher but I wouldn't be worried about who they filled the staff with.

Rhule more than likely wants another shot at the NFL (just guessing).

We get turned around. Get in a lot more talent along the way. Mickey gains more experience being under a solid HC. Takes over for good in about 5 years.

Natty's year after year.

I’ve heard he hates recruiting which is a big red flag, especially at a place like Nebraska.
