I read somewhere this morning that we’re 58 days from the season opener with Cincinnati and I can’t help but get excited.

It’s been like this for me since the early ’70’s, and even with all the crap years stacked on top of each other over the last decade, I still look forward to the next football season and this season is no different.

Having joined the board after last football season, this fall will be interesting to me in more ways than one. I’ve been on here for a handful of months now, but I really don’t get a feel for the board from a football perspective. I see that it’s full of jocularity, which I’m in favor of, as my previous home had a serious case of twisted panties and wouldn’t tolerate much, if any of the back and forth that goes on here. I like humor and am fine with it getting a little gritty at times. Sometimes a little edge is good for everyone. That said, I am very interested to see what this looks like when we’re actually talking football. I’ve seen a handful of posts that seem written by someone very knowledgeable of the sport, position groups, sides of the ball, etc., but since it’s been off season it’s been limited. I’ve enjoyed the ‘Bourbon’ thread, but who wouldn’t? I’ve also learned a lot about what a knob Sean Callahan is, love the creative word corrections for words like Cockeye, etc, but I’m ready to talk football.

Back to the football thing. We are going to do that, right?

About 1/3 - 1/2 of the board loses their ever-loving minds during game threads if at any point Nebraska is not dominating. Plenty of tPB taters (the tPB version of a tater is excessively negative, & over-the-top cynical about the old-school ways), but lots of good ball-knowers in the forum too.

I’ve traditionally stayed away from game day threads for two reasons.

1) I’m either at or watching the game and have no interest in discussing it. I’m watching the goddamned thing and will do my own evaluation.

2) If only 1/3 to 1/2 lose their mind, that’s lower than most places I’ve seen.

I get the ‘tater’ negativity to a point. We’ve played less than average football for way too long. That said, I’m not going to go out and look for reasons to bitch about anything. Enough legit reasons are always provided, and I’m typically looking for the next reason to see light at the end of the tunnel. I was also a ‘Run the ball’ guy for way too long, until I realized watching my youngest son’s high school football team play spread offense after spread offense, with the run being an afterthought. The steady train of kids coming out of high school who can block and run a run heavy or traditional option offense just doesn’t exist anymore.

Looking forward to some good football talk.

I think the general consensus was optimistic when we first started. I feel like most of us have gotten more pessimistic as we finished out the Frost years. Getting more optimistic again but still well below early Frost years. That could change with a decent season like 8-4. 7-5 probably isn't enough to change the mood.

8-4 is a down year at Cockeye, and it's been nearly a decade since we've been to achieve even that mediocrity. It's just unreal how bad we have been.

SUPER level headed and everyone generally agrees with one another on the main issues facing our team. It's very rational and very respectful at all times.

A lot more ball knowledge on this board compared to others, for the most part. It makes the game threads and mid-week threads between games much more enjoyable, IMO.

Can we pump the brakes on this "down year" shit?

Since Nebraska entered the Big 10, back in 2011, Cockeye has only played 11 ranked teams on the road. 3 of them have been Wisconsin, and 2 of them have been Cockeye State.

That means the number of times they've faced Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State equates to the following:

Ohio State - 6 times
Michigan - 7 times
Penn State - 9 times.

And during that timeframe, road games at OSU, Michigan, and Penn State have only seen them ranked 6 times.

The Huskers have played 19 road games in the Big Ten vs. ranked teams during that same time frame.

I get what you're saying and also looking for football talk and ready for the season. That being said, I'm a little disappointed you haven't discussed catching the big ones or offshore fishing around Amity Island.

Yeah man, you've done well making me jelly. What even is that? A monster flounder lol? Take me out fishing, good lawd!

We pride ourselves in shitting on anybody who assumes they decide what can and cannot be discussed.

That said, the discussion here is far more reasonable than Tater Island and slightly less gay than 247.

It’s a great place.

This is a good description.

The emotions here are just as wild as anywhere else, but the opinions behind them are generally more well-informed and more intelligent.

I hear you, but there is very little to actually talk about at this point that isn’t just complete navel gazing speculation.
