Baseball America will also be updating their NCAA Tournament projections throughout the week.

In this update, Stanford and South Carolina join the hosts – but with a twist. South Carolina would be hosting as a No. 2 seed in this scenario, with Old Dominion as the No. 1 seed. ODU did not bid to host and therefore is not on the shortlist of 20 teams that the selection committee can pick from to host regionals. But the Monarchs are up to No. 12 in RPI – the best of any Conference USA team, are 16-6 in road games, 13-6 against top-50 RPI teams and 19-11 against top-100 RPI teams. Those metrics all stack up favorable when compared to any other potential No. 1 seed.

A traveling No. 1 seed would be unconventional in the modern version of the NCAA Tournament. The selection committee has not sent a top seed on the road since 2010 when Florida State was the No. 1 seed in the Norwich Regional, hosted by Connecticut. It previously was a more common part of the NCAA Tournament, but as more schools have invested more money in their facilities, more schools have met the hosting requirements.

In this year, however, because the NCAA changed to host selection process because it needed to allow for coronavirus testing facilities to be constructed at every regional host site – a process that takes weeks, not days – a traveling No. 1 seed is very much on the table. In addition to ODU, if Florida State, Miami or North Carolina State wins the ACC Tournament, or Oklahoma State wins the Big 12 Tournament, they could find themselves on the road as a No. 1 seed. Because they already are assured of playing on the road, making them a traveling No. 1 seed and therefore not denying them the reward of a home regional for their on-field success should make the decision more palatable.
