My worthless ranking on our assistant coaches that no one asked for

Bored at the desk today, decided I would rank our assistants based only on vibes and what we know so far about them, a lot has changed for me on this since they were hired.

1. Tony White - DC. Proven power 5 commodity. Seems destined to be a head coach within the next 5 years. Loved everything I have seen from him in videos.

2. Corey Campbell - Strength. Probably the biggest upgrade on the staff from that bum Duval. Way more than just a "Hold the coach back" man, guys seem to respect him and his training program seems so extremely detailed.

3. Terrance Knighton - DLine. Was not thrilled when he was hired. But I think he looks really legit. By far the biggest riser for me and I think will be a fan favorite. I also think assistant Phillip Simpson will be big time.

4. EJ Barthel - RB's. Loved it when he was hired. Still do. The dude can coach running backs and will turn into an ace recruiter.

5. Ed Foley - ST. Seems like he knows his special teams and does a good job getting around the state

6. Marcus Satterfield - OC. Unlike White, I don't think he is destined for HC anywhere. I know SC was glad to be rid of him, but he was OC on a winning SEC football team, which is worth something makes him the most qualified OC we have had in the better part of a decade. Not perfect, but at least he's not coming from the credit union.

7. Garret McGuire - WR. He has grown on me since he was hired, and he certainly did not inherit the strongest room on the team. Still think it will take him a year or two before he really starts to click. Also anxious to know how well he can develop receivers. Overall optimistic for the future.

8. Evan Cooper - DB's. I don't know man, something about him just has not been clicking for me. I have no reason.

9. Donovan Raiola - OL. Yes, last year was not entirely his fault, but he was still the O line coach, and we all saw that O line in action. His recruiting seems to be improving with Tauma and hopefully Brix, but I just cannot believe it until I see it.

10. Rob Dvoracek - LB. Again, I know nothing. But he does not seem to have the Mcguire "Up and comer" feel or the Knighton "Diamond in the rough" feel. Just seems so meh.

N/A Josh Martin - TE - He has coached some decent TE's before, but he is just an interim. Hard to judge

Mine are more worthless so..
1. White - Future HC
2. Knighton - Future NFL DL coach
3. Cooper - Talent evaluator
4. Barthel - Motivator
5. Dvoracek - I actually like his demeanor and think he'll be a good college football coach
6. Raiola - I want to give him a chance with Rhule. I don't think Frost did him any favors
7. Satterfield - Very skeptical of this hire
8. Martin - Love the Texas connection, would have had Wager here too
9. McGuire - He's really young. I wonder if an analyst for a year then moved into the WR job would have been better, but Rhule knows him better than any of us
10. Foley - Guy's done a nice job on social media and reaching out to in state coaches and communities. I think you could do that as an analyst.

Going back to the Wager hire, if it were me (a nobody that is absolutely not qualified to make any decisions hiring a staff at the university of Nebraska)....it makes 10000% more sense to have hired Bob Wager, who was specifically known in Texas as a GREAT special teams guy as the special teams coach, Josh Martin as the TE coach from the get go and Foley as an analyst.

Let's remember though, originally Satterfield was coming as the OC/TE coach and Jake Peetz was going to be coaching QBs. When that ended up falling through I wonder if Wager moved from ST to TE and Foley stepped in.

In hindsight I would have liked to have seen a more creative hire at OC or Rhule to stick to his original plan and left Satterfield at OC/TE and found another QB/Pass Game Coordinator. I hope it works out.

I definitely like the defensive staff more especially with the analyst hires made. I worry about the offensive staff's experience.

This is Foley's first full time assistant gig since 2018 when he was at Temple. I still can't figure out why he was an better option than Busch on any criteria other than "knows Matt Rhule".

Totally agree on the defensive staff piece and I think any order of rankings after Tony White is probably defensible.

I remember someone speaking very highly of Dvoracek recently

I still wonder if Foley goes back to an analyst role after a year. Maybe just something where Rhule knows he needs a guy that understands his culture to be there on the field 24/7. I dunno. Weird hire to me but what the fuck do I know?

Completely disagree with you on Cooper & Dvoracek.

I'm extremely skeptical of Marcus Satterfield. His resume with the Cocks was horrible outside of two games, and we don't have South Carolina's talent on offense. I'm praying he can recreate what he did with PJ Walker at Temple.

Raiola should have been fired with the rest of the last staff.

I am in wait-and-see mode on Satterfield...He came with Shane Beamer in 2021 after SC went 4-8 and 2-8 the two years prior. In his two years at SC, they had winning records and back-to-back bowl appearances.

Like all great fans, you know that when something works out you knew it would all along and when something doesn't work out you knew it wouldn't all along too
