Recruiting: Why Nebraska has eyed offensive lineman Rex Waterman 'since day one'

LINCOLN — Top high school football recruits usually have a laundry list of requirements for their future college program — a lucrative NIL deal, immediate playing time.
Rex Waterman has a simple request.

“Just as long as I’m playing for a program that doesn’t suck,” he said.

The 2026 three-star tackle from Chandler (Arizona) Hamilton High School got a Nebraska offer at the beginning of this year and makes his official visit this weekend.
Waterman said offensive line coach Donovan Raiola and director of player personnel Keith Williams have been a mainstay throughout his recruitment process.

“They’ve been on me since day one,” the 6-foot-5, 295-pounder said. “They’ve just been really cool in this process, supporting me and giving me time.”

Waterman said that he is looking forward to spending time with Husker players and seeing how he fits into the locker room. UCLA, Boise State, Duke and NU are his final four.

He has two Big Ten schools in his final list. UCLA is also vying for the tackle’s talents. He unofficially visited the Bruins in January and had his official visit on May 16. Waterman noted that playing in a prestigious conference known for talent in the trenches entices him.

“It’s pretty important,” Waterman said, “being part of a program that is dominant up front and just whoops teams in general.”

Outside of football, Waterman said he can build relationships and grow off the field in Lincoln. He said he liked the campus, but that the “insane” fan support and community are his favorite aspects of the city.
Along with his visit to Lincoln, he will also visit Duke on June 13. Although the Huskers won’t get the final visit before Waterman commits, he’s visited three times NU before his decision.

Offensive line development and a great coaching staff set Nebraska apart from the rest of his final list, Waterman said.
“It’s a great place and I don’t want to miss out on it,” Waterman said, “because they’re definitely building something.”
