I agree with you ultimately, but we seem to be looking at adding: 2 QBs, 1 more OL, 1 DL, 1 DB, and then maybe 1 RB, 1 WR or 1 Too Good to Pass on). That would be an additional possible 7 players added from the portal. We are currently at 88 with the addition of Hunter Anthony and the subtraction of Joseph and Walker. That would mean we need to see another 10 players leave to get those additional players.
Daniel Cerni, Damian Jackson, Wyatt Liewer, and Trent Hixson seem like the 4 likeliest to leave (or in Hixson's and Jackson's case, removed from scholarship). Would then need an additional 6 more guys. Deontre Thomas seems like another that will be gone, but seems to be having second thoughts.

Didn't he struggle with knee injuries? Given the level of competition in Fishers room I can see how he could get buried on the depth chart quickly if you don't stay healthy.

Ya I mean the simple math is about 40-50% of every class just wont work out. Everything from injuries, to bad fits, to misses, etc....
You need to get that off your roster and back fill with jucos, transfers and HS guys who are ready.
It is a numbers game at the end of the day. That is why I was so frustrated with Bo for not maximizing scholarships. Fuck put us on a self imposed probations. That was probably the reason why he never got over the hump. Never maxed scholarships and didn't process guys who were non contributors.

That and he recruits like a mad man. I mean he added a 5* transfer who sounds like a physical stud and every time I talk to somebody they just rave about Buford.
I get the sense his room can be really stressful at times given the level of competition. It takes a specific personality to be a good fit in there. Just my read.
I also get the sense Joseph is going to bring that to the WR room if you listen to his press conference he sounds like the WR version of Fish.
