PISCATAWAY, N.J. – They did it.
For the first time since 2018, the Nebraska football team won back-to-back Big Ten games thanks to a 14-13 victory at Rutgers on Friday night.
Here are some quick notes from what Joseph, as well as Travis Vokolek, said at the podium:
>> Joseph said he was he wasn't worried about Casey Thompson's health during the game, because of Thompson's toughness.
>> Joseph said he was proud of the team's ability to play all four quarters.
>> It was next man up, Joseph said when asked what he thought of the backups that played big snaps, like corner Brandon Moore and inside linebacker Eteva Mauga-Clements.
>> Joseph said starting corner Quinton Newsome was "a little banged up," which is why he didn't play in the second half.
>> Joseph said "that was a great play by Blaise," when asked about Gunnerson's tackle on the blocked punt in the first quarter. That play saved four points, the coach said.
>> Joseph was asked about the fourth-and-1 play that ended with an incompletion in the third quarter. "I'm gonna let Whipple call his game," Joseph responded. Joseph said they liked the defensive look that Rutgers gave them.
>> What's it mean to grind and gut out a one-point win on the road in the Big Ten? "This is good for the kids and good for the coaches," Joseph said.

Travis Vokolek

>> Did it surprise Vokolek that the offense continued to throw the ball? Not really, Vokolek said. The offense has playmakers, and he thinks it's a good idea to get them the ball. The tight end said he kept telling Trey Palmer the offense will get him the ball, and it did.
>> Vokolek understands how big the defense played on Friday night. "I'm going to keep giving the defense credit for how they played tonight."

Casey Thompson

>> Thompson said he was in the locker room getting checked out by the doctors at halftime, but had to wait for Rutgers' team to exit the tunnel before he could get back on the field. That's why he was late to the field.
>> Thompson said Rutgers' defensive line was getting into the backfield so quickly that he wasn't really seeing his receivers well. But the quarterback knew that wasn't going to last, and he felt the offense settled in during the third and fourth quarters.
>> Thompson said, at first, he wasn't sure on the pass play on fourth-and-1. But once Rutgers' defense came out like it did, Thompson knew he had the matchups that favored his skill players. The pass fell complete, of course.
