Glenn "Shemy" Schmbechler, the son of legendary Michigan coach Bo Schembechler, resigned from a recruiting job with the Wolverines on Saturday after some highly questionable activity on his Twitter account came to light.

Schembechler's hire as Michigan's assistant director of football recruiting was announced Wednesday, after previously working for more than 20 years as an NFL scout.
Over the course of Thursday and Friday, fans started noticing Schembechler's Twitter account had liked a number of racist tweets. You can see some of them in these threads, but among the worst were claims that Jim Crow laws were beneficial to the Black community, derisive responses to House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries with African tribal imagery, comparisons of Black Lives Matter protests to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and praise for fringe presidential candidate Robert Kennedy Jr. "as long as he doesn't go trans."
Schembechler's account has since been deactivated, but not before fans noticed it had unliked several of those tweets during the initial furor.
In a joint statement released Saturday, Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh and athletic director Warde Manuel acknowledged Schembechler's social media activity had "caused concern and pain for individuals" in the community:
“Effective this afternoon, Shemy Schembechler has resigned his position with Michigan Football. We are aware of some comments and likes on social media that have caused concern and pain for individuals in our community. Michigan Athletics is fully committed to a place where our coaches, staff and student-athletes feel welcome and where we fully support the University’s and Athletic Department’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.”
Schembechler is the youngest son of Bo Schembechler, who coached Michigan from 1969 to 1989, led them to 13 Big Ten titles and retired as the program's all-time wins leader. Harbaugh started at quarterback for him during the 1980s.

Before his three days with the Wolverines, the younger Schembechler worked as a scout for the Chicago Bears from 1998 to 2000, the Washington Commanders from 2000 to 2012, the Seattle Seahawks from 2012 to 2013 and the Las Vegas Raiders from 2019 to 2023, per MLive. The Raiders reportedly fired him in February.

Or if you're a public figure be smarter. I think a whole lot of things but don't put them out to the world, friends or family.

Liking tweets that say things like “the blacks were better under Jim Crow” might work on parts of this board and certain dark corners of 4chan but in normal discourse this would be an absolute dealbreaker.

Bye asshole.

I'm not at all here to suggest that the African-American experience was better under Jim Crow, however, there is something to the idea that when there were businesses that were owned by African-Americans that catered specifically TO African-Americans, the overall success of the African-American community was higher. There are a lot of things that Jim Crow hurt, and the last parting shot those ridiculous laws got in was to hurt Black Owned Businesses on the way out.

I'd use the Negro Baseball Leagues as an example. They had a vibrant and wonderful league that was making all kinds of money for players and owners and entertaining fans in a way that was probably even better than the Major Leagues of the time. Once Jackie Robinson went to Brooklyn and other teams started signing the best Negro league players...there were fewer black professional baseball players and no high level black professional baseball owners.

No. Just no. Stop.

Why? Bob Kendrick himself talks about this. That's where I got the train of thought. Again, Jim Crow was not a positive thing, but the end of it meant that racist white people could have even more control by undercutting black owned businesses at every turn, which is exactly what they did.

Bro are you being for real right now

Yes, and its basic economics. White owned businesses kept black people out for generations, and were still catering to the majority of the population. As soon as they weren't going to get their way in keeping them out, they were able to undercut with consumers and suppliers, and do everything they could to drive black owned businesses out of operation.

I mean, think about it. Business A is owned by someone who was only able to cater to 15% of the population, and was only able to find suppliers within that 15% of the population, but 15% of the population could only go to them to do business. Business B is catering to 75% of the population and finding suppliers from within the 75% of the population. Do you really think Business A was suddenly able to get as good of deals from the same suppliers as Business B? Of course not, the deck was stacked against them. The suppliers of Business A also didn't have the resources to match the suppliers of Business B, so costs stay up.

So now, the 15% of the population is able to shop/eat/do business with other 85% of the population and Business B has been able to maneuver in their favor to have much lower costs, much wider exposure, and much greater control. They're able to price Business A out of the market in the same way that Walmart can price out your locally owned stores.

Was Jim Crow good for the African-American community? Absolutely fucking not. However, the way it ended did nothing to actually benefit POC and ended up harming their businesses and thus harming the communities that the owners and employees were a part of and supported. That isn't to say it shouldn't have ended AT ALL. You've got to think beyond the surface level of things and see that if there hadn't been away to still assert some control over POC, they would've never ended it. Their way of control, was hurting them economically, which is exactly what they did.
