Its Official Mickey Joseph Is N Again

Joseph announced as new assistant on Frost's revamped Husker staff

ByBRIAN CHRISTOPHERSON 11 minutes ago

Mickey Joseph can change that color of polo on those recruiting visits now. The logo will be nothing unfamiliar.

On Friday, the former Husker quarterback was officially announced as Nebraska's Wide Receivers Coach/Passing Game Coordinator/Associate Head Coach after a week of the coaching carousel spinning at hyper speed, including at the LSU school Joseph departs from. It marks the first known hire of four important full-time openings Scott Frost is busy trying to fill on his staff all the while the Huskers try to finalize pieces to their 2022 recruiting class and find the right additional parts in the transfer portal.

With the latter, Joseph should be of some immediate assistance. Since arriving to LSU in 2017, he has been viewed as a strong recruiter, and that includes some pull in the New Orleans area where he's from.

From one home – Joseph is native of Marrero, Louisiana and coached at LSU the past five years – to another home of sorts for the 53-year-old coach, who came to Nebraska to play QB for Tom Osborne from 1988-91. He was Nebraska's top quarterback for most of the 1990 season, running for 554 and throwing for 624, and not stepping out of bounds on that ice rink of a field against Colorado, right? Well, officials said so.

But instead of debating old stuff, Husker fans are more eager to see what Joseph can do with a receivers room that loses Samori Toure but isn't without young talent like Zavier Betts and a crop of prospects from the last two recruiting classes eager to shine. There's also players like Omar Manning, a receiver with an NFL body but more to prove and another year to prove it in Lincoln if he wants it.

While talent was surely easier to procure at LSU than Nebraska in recent years, with three national titles since the turn of the century and some geography advantages at play in relation to top talent, Joseph's results speak well. He coached a good number of receivers who have rolled or are heading into the NFL, including Justin Jefferson, Ja’Marr Chase, Terrace Marshall, D.J. Chark, Racey McMath and Kayshon Boutte, among others.

He was rewarded as recently as May with a pay raise from $400,000 to $500,000, set to go to $550,000 in 2022, and also held an assistant head coaching position the last two years under Ed Orgeron, who the Tigers parted ways with just two years after their 2019 national title.

That is part of this story, as LSU on Monday hired Brian Kelly away from Notre Dame. This came just a day after 247Sports learned the Huskers and Joseph were in talks to bring the assistant aboard to Lincoln.

With Kelly's hire, it was wondered if the head coach might retain some of the current Tigers staff, like Joseph. The new LSU head coach offered no clues from the bat.

"I have not made any decisions based upon who will stay and who may go," Kelly said at his introductory press conference. "I haven't had any individual conversations with any of them, so any narrative out there is not coming from any conversations that I've had with them. They are well-respected and I will get an opportunity to vet out all of those coaches. They've done a great job. I know the business, they know the business."

As of midday Thursday, Kelly and Joseph hadn't met, with Football Scoop then first reporting around the 5 o'clock hour that Nebraska and Joseph were finalizing the deal.

You can now consider the agreement finally final.

Joseph Joins Husker Football Coaching Staff

Nebraska Head Coach Scott Frost announced Friday Mickey Joseph will join the Husker coaching staff as Wide Receivers Coach/Passing Game Coordinator/Associate Head Coach. The hiring is pending the completion of a University of Nebraska background check.

A former Husker quarterback, Joseph joins Nebraska after five seasons as the wide receivers coach at LSU, and he brings more than 25 years of coaching experience to Frost's staff.

"I am honored to return to Nebraska to join Coach Frost's staff," Joseph said. "I can't wait to get to Lincoln to work with our players and represent Nebraska Football. Once you are a Husker your love for the program never leaves you and my family and I could not be more excited."

Joseph was responsible for developing some of the nation's top receivers during his time with the Tigers. In 2019, LSU assembled the best group of receivers in SEC history. The Tigers' three starters—Ja'Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson and Terrace Marshall—combined for 241 receptions for 3,991 yards and 51 touchdowns.

Chase was the 2019 Biletnikoff Award winner, earned first-team All-America honors and set SEC records for receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, while Jefferson set the LSU record with 111 receptions. Overall, Joseph coached four receivers selected in the first two rounds of the NFL Draft during his time at LSU, including Chase, the fifth pick in the 2021 Draft and Jefferson, the 22nd pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

A New Orleans native, Joseph was part of an offensive staff that helped LSU set numerous SEC records in 2019, including passing yards (6,024), passing TDs (61) and total offense per game (568.4) en route to a 15-0 season and national championship.

In addition to his work with the LSU receivers, Joseph also served as assistant head coach for the past two seasons and is regarded as one of the nation's top recruiters.

"Mickey Joseph brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our coaching staff," Frost said. "He is an excellent teacher and mentor for young players and is a proven recruiter. We are excited to bring Mickey back to his alma mater and have him play a key role in the success of our offense."

Joseph joined the LSU staff in 2017 after serving as the running backs coach at Louisiana Tech in 2016, where he helped the Bulldogs to a 9-5 record and a win in the Armed Forces Bowl. Louisiana Tech ranked second nationally in scoring and averaged 514.9 total yards per game.

Joseph coached receivers and special teams at Grambling in 2014 and 2015, helping the Tigers to 16 wins in two seasons. Joseph was the special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach at Alcorn State in 2013, helping the school to a 9-3 record, its most wins in 30 years.

Joseph spent five seasons at Langston University (2008-12), and served as the head coach in 2011 and 2012, when he led the school to a 13-7 record. During the summer of 2012, Joseph spent time with the Houston Texans as part of an NFL minority internship. While in Houston, Joseph worked with the running backs and all aspects of special teams.

Before working at Langston, Joseph served as the head football coach and Director of Athletics for Desire Street Academy, a private school in New Orleans' Ninth Ward area. Joseph guided the school through the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, including moving the school to Florida. Overall, seven of his players at the school signed with Division I football programs.

Joseph also had college coaching stints at Central Oklahoma, Nicholls State, Alabama State, Tulane and Wayne State and high school stops at Archbishop Shaw, his alma mater, in New Orleans and Omaha North High.

Joseph was one of the nation's most prized prep recruits when he joined Coach Tom Osborne's Nebraska program in 1988. He was the Gatorade National Player of the Year and a first-team Parade All-American. Joseph started nine games in his Nebraska career, rushing for 1,091 yards and 16 touchdowns, while passing for 909 yards and 14 touchdowns. During his four seasons, Nebraska posted a 39-9-1 overall record, won two Big Eight titles, while playing in two Orange Bowl games, a Citrus Bowl and a Fiesta Bowl.

What's a passing game coordinator? I've never heard of that roll. Is this more situational, such as red zone/3rd down or is he working with qb's?

In theory it's you're responsible for passing game concepts....routes, reads, etc. You help determine game plan-wise what concepts you're deploying for the given week for the Offensive Coordinator.

Usually it's just a title though...

Love the hire.
But doesn’t mean shit until they get the O line figured out.
