Is a disappointment to many, but the 2001 OU-Nebraska game is on right now. It’s actually nice seeing a team who played ball control offense with great specials teams winning the field position battle. It’s been a long time since I can remember a Nebraska team doing something like this on a consistent basis. It’s a good formula for making a bowl every year.

What about playing horrible to ghastly special teams and having an offense that gives the ball away so quickly that even an average to good defense can't stem the tide? is that considered good.

You would have hoped Frost learned something from the TO- Solich style. It has never materialized and probably won’t.

Hell we had 3 drafted this year and we aren’t at a 1/10th of what the special teams were in 2001. If Frost would just produce a team who played solid special teams and had the mentality to play field position when needed we would have made a bowl by now. Pelini even figured that out for the most part.

Winning the special teams aspect of the game is so underrated. For T.O.'s entire career (to my memory), we almost always won the special teams battle. Over the course of a game, it is very, very key to ultimately winning or losing that game.

Obviously other areas of the game are very key also - like consistently winning/controlling the LOS and being at least even or on the right side of turnovers. Do those 3 things - win LOS, be even or win the turnover battle and be even or usually win special teams, and I bet those 3 things alone would lead to a 60 to 70% win percentage. Of course, winning those phases of the game means you likely have good or great players executing those phases (O Line/D line, Kickers/punters and organized/effective special teams, and an offense that values holding on to the ball and a defense that creates turnovers). You can coach players to excel in these areas, but you also have to have talent to achieve these goals.

The thing I've always found surprising about Frost is his pedigree and the lack of insights he seems to have gained from it. He played for coaching greats like Bill Walsh, TO, Bill Parcells and was an assistant under others. I don't see much of any of them in his coaching style or play of his teams.

I think Oklahoma was retooling their Oline that year & they could not block us upfront so Jason White & their mobile QB kept getting subbed in & out. I remember watching the defensive side for Oklahoma shut us down & u can see the difference in talent, I believe Roy Williams is one guy for em. Crouch didn’t do much that game outside his TD catch & Craver might’ve been the real MVP that game

That was when the Stoops boys brought hellacious defense to their opponents. Just like Bo, over time they didn't do much to adjust their scheme and it eventually became a weakness in big games.

Stoops defense wasn’t as nasty after Venerables left in my opinion. Bob should have got rid of his brother but you knew that couldn’t happen.

I remember NTV came to my school (Cedar Hollow K-8 outside of GI) to interview students about the game.


I gave a long thought out answer about playing good defense and not fumbling.

Kid that got interviewed after me had a buzzed with rat tail hair style like Obi Wan in Star Wars Episode 1. He yelled “we are gonna kick their butt!” and punched straight up on the air.



He was the only interview that NTV showed.
I made my parents put the news on that night and watched the entire thing waiting for them to run the special….wrecked me.

Because he sucks. One score losses or not. If you’re not even close to 50% in winning one score games over 4 years… you ain’t good. It’s a trend that has haunted us since he started. There’s so much to unpack within each of those losses and how he manages his rotations, time clock, etc. He’s a shitty coach.
